Hypo to Hyper today?

Hi,

I've just beeen diagnosed last monday as having diabetes type 2 and have just started glycazide. My levels were up to 10.6 before and have been a bit lower.

This morning before breakfast they were 8.8, then 2hrs aftger breakfast 3.7 (I felt shakey and wierd). I ate chocolate with lunch to get it up, and about an hour after it's 9.9. I still feel a bit wierd.

Is it normal to fluctate like this?

Gliclazide (is that what you ment) makes the pancreas produce more insulin and a bit like injecting insulin any active insulin will continual to work until it's basically burnt itself out, causing a hypo..

This is something that you need to be carefull about when using these types of medication.. It sounds as though you probably over-treated your hypo.. Hence the higher later reading..

Treating a hypo with chocolate really isn't wise, as you need to get the blood glucose back to above normal levels, the problem with chocolate, even though full of sugar it is also has a high fat content, which slows the bodies ability to asorb the sugar, you do need a fast acting carb.. That can be measured to prevent over treating they hypo..

Personally I use Jelly Babies, around 3-4 normally sorts the problem, others chose an pure fruit juice, apple orange etc, Gluco tabs, full fizzy drinks such as coke lucozade..

once you've tested and confirmed the hypo, you should take your chosen fast acting carb, wait 15 minutes then test again to check the blood glucose has returned to normal, if not reapeat until it there.. Then have a small carb snack to prevent the body going back into hypo, unless of cause you are about to eat a meal.. Just carry on with the meal as normal..

You may find that even though your BG had returned to normal, you still feel out of sorts or still abit shakey for a bit after... The length of time, is pretty individual and sometimes its will depend on how low your blood glucose was before treating, as the body will release Adrinaline (sp) and this is can make you feel shaky, until it's level has settle back down to normal..
