Hi...just wondering can you have a hypo with type 2 on Metformin?
Reason I ask is when I went to bed last night I was literally starving even though I had eaten my tea and my head was pounding?
I'm new to this and don't have a meter so wad a bit worried and unsure what to do?

Thanks

Nicky

Yes you can have a hypo when on metformin and the best thing to do is invest in a meter if you can not get one issued to you by your doctor/nurse as this will allow you to keep an eye on your levels

Metformin will not cause a hypo but you can certainly have one while on it. Metformin slows down the production of glucose in your liver and helps increase insulin sensitivity. It does not affect the amount of insulin your pancreas makes. I agree you should get a meter ASAP.

I have a meter from the diabetic Nurse but i invested in a code free one form off this site, they are cheap and the strips are not as dear as the ones out of the chemist.... check out Code-Free Meter...

Going to invest in meter....it's just not knowing what is happening to you that's a pain!

If you are not on sulfonylureas or insulin, or other drugs that dump insulin into your system without regard to food intake, you are no more likey to have a hypo than anyone who does not have diabetes.

In other words, hypos can happen - but it has some other cause.

More likely, you can have false hypos if you are used to having very high blood glucose and it drops significantly. That can create hypo-like symptons since your body has gotten accustomed to the hight levels.
