hi al  :) !!!!!!!!
i ws just wondering what are the effects of a hypo besides shaking, weakness ect.

i no dat when you are hyper cells cant use the insulin and the liver starts to braks down the glucose...........

i was just wondering as im curious about this topic in particular.................

ne ideas??????

Yesterday after doing a bit of walking a little cycling and climbing a flight of stairs (after lunch) I suddenly had a crushing headache and I broke out into a hot clammy sweat. I had just bought a packet of those dextrose tablets I took one a 10 minutes or so later headache and sweats were gone.

Hi Candy!
that's just what those things are for.

Hi Sarz

Hypo symptoms change over the years. I find myself now just standing oddly when starting to go low. Often my partner can tell just by the way I hold my arms in a stiff position lol.

I very rarely ever use glucose tabs (simply because they taste absolutely awful and take ages to eat). I always keep some jellybeans or fruit pastels about and they work just as good as glucose tabs and are a lot cheaper.

Yes the tablets are not very nice but I will stick with them as Jellybeans are way too sweet for my palate and fruit pastilles I adore and wouldnt have the willpower for just one or two it would be packet by packet

the Dextros tablets are nasty.... but the lucozade tablets are quite tastey! I do prefer Jelly Beans though, although they're not AS quick as lucozade tabs.

I find i go quite pale when im hypo, and my pupils contract to little pin pricks almost.. that's how my other half can tell him hypo... other than acting like an idiot lol.

my internal signs are shakeyness, light headedness, dizzyness, confusion and sometimes sweaty... at night is a different story, my heart beats so hard that it wakes me up and i get scared of getting up so much so that i just stay in bed and wait untill my liver dumps.

Sometimes i get the munchies and eat anything i can lay my hands on...

I "vaguely" recall one night when an early reading showed my BG at 1.7 - I felt clammy cold and a bit shaky but actually is really RUDE health, over confident and a bit loud ... no wonder people can mistake you for drunk!

Please! Never leave a hypo untreated, particularly if you are T1. You cannot rely on a liver dump. I know two ladies in another forum who's partners have permanent brain damage from losing consciousness and fitting during severe hypos. These two gentlemen are now living in care homes, will never recover and never come home. The consequences for their loved ones have been truly horrific.

It is possible that jellybeans may not work in time before going under! I suggest some lucozade (fizzy) and a couple of biscuits. Only need 200ml and 20-30 grams of carbs to get out of a hypo!

Eeek... that would send me into the stratosphere BG wise even from a hypo! I use one Lucozade tablet followed by 2 WeightWatchers biscuits at around 14g carb. The standard advice is 15g carb, wait 15 minutes and test again to see if you need further treatment. We all vary and have to work out what suits us best.

Liquid containing sugar will always be more easily available for crossing the stomach wall as nutrient breakdown (it appears to your body that part of the digestion job is already done) - so lucozade or similar sugary drink (even a glass of water with sugar dissolved into it) will enter your blood stream waaaaaaaaaaaay quicker than any foodstuff, regardless of how massive the carb-load.

so, to recap

deep fried mars bar with sugar sprinkles = not gonna help

glucose containing drink = best option

however, it's a lot easier to carry a small packet of glucose tablets in your coat pocket and as they dissolve quite quickly in your mouth they are a pretty safe bet

you can also get a prescription for Glucogel... formally known as HypoStop,

It's a little tube with a twist off cap that you just squirt into your mouth, it's litterally a glucose gel... that's the FASTEST acting stuff i've ever used... faster than lucozade or any sugary drink i've tried.

They come in boxes of three and definatly available on prescription (that's where i got mine from).

Glucogels will also absorb thru any porous membrane.so will absorb into the mouth, gums and tongue. and they quick. but taste horrible. Hopefully I'll get them on prescription again one day. when I sue the pants of my GP.
