Hypoglycemia

I had hypos before I was diagnosed, including one where I collapsed in Sainsburys and got rushed to hospital :shock: The doctors ran a variety of tests but no cause was ever identified.

In retrospect I think I was experiencing episodes of reactive hypoglycaemia - it probably wasn't picked up by the doctors as by the time they took my blood I'd already had something to eat.

It's got a lot worse since i was diagnosed - a bowl of porridge will shoot me up to 18-20 and then down to 3 in the space of an hour. I am on Gliclazide though so that probably doesn't help!

It should disappear when you get back control of your BG, don't worry, as I posted earlier, it can be one of the symptoms that has been reported.
(Just hope they don't keep you waiting too long. )

How did the blood test go.
What sort of timescale does the doctor suggest he'll be working on with you?

Best advice is to wait and see what the doctor says.
It does sound similar to me, but I couldn't tell you my levels.
Insulin resistance can cause this sort of overshoot as well.
I have switched to a low GI, low GL diet, given up rice, pasta, potatoes, any sugar, and noticed a great improvement with a little and often diet.
It would be up to you whether you want to try it though, without you bring diagnosed, it could make you a lot worse, and could confuse the doctor further.

hallo, daisy, 'worried me' here, fiona. i joined the site about an hour ago. i was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycaemia yesterday and am still reeling. i can identify totally with how ur feeling - my family are on the receiving end of my frequently horrid outbursts due to my mood swings. as for your energy levels, i get a good day 1 in about 10 when i tend to absolutely go for it as i seem to have bags of energy for a very short period. most times i just feel, well, non-specifically ill. like, really ill and i don't even normally go down with even a cold, so this thing has really knowcked me for six. as for the driving thing, i was putting that down to fluctuating BP but i now know differently. i avoid driving when i feel 'spaced out' as i don't feel safe concentration wise. i took a short trip down to the suoermarket this morning and was alarmed when i realised i'd gone through a zebra without realising it was there. i could say this is the first time i've done this, but how do i know? it's scary. the whole thing is.
my sugars dropped to 2.3 so i know exactly how u feel. having a five year old is demanding but you need to rally the troops, as u'll prob find ur too tired to get up from the sofa sometimes. in other words, u can't expend the energy u don't have.
good luck down the docs, because i'm giving you a shove to get down there. v low sugars can be v dangerous.

Hi daisy

Heavy exercise raises cortisol levels. Cortisol signals the liver to 'dump' glucose (and fatty acids) into the blood stream. Cortisol, also, blunts insulin sensitivity.

Daisy, I would stop and test when this happens It actually depends on the type of activity you are doing .Aerobic activity ie running at about 60-70% heart rate is more likely to lower glucose levels. The cells can untilise glucose very efficiently during this type of exercise.
If on the other hand, your training session includes sprints or fast interval training then you release hormones that cause your liver to release needed glucose. If this counteregulatory system isn't working effciently it can cause too much to be released causing a sharp rise in levels.
If you are low after exercise then if you don't refuel then the counter regularatory system will provide the needed glucose... and may provide too much. The refueling doesn't require a large meal, just a small snack containing a few carbs and protein.
