Good morning,

Can some one advise me ?
I am type 2.
I eat 3 main meals a day and eat some nuts, chickpeas or some biscuits in between meals.
When I forget to eat in between main meals,
I will get hypo.
I will then quickly take 2 candies as advised by my GP.
Is frequent hypos harmful to my brain?
Thank you.

Good morning. What sort of levels are you when you have your hypos, and how do you feel when you have the hypo readings

Below 4 when I have hypo.
I feel very weak, sweating,
Numb at the tips of my tongue. Cannot get up
to do anything. Need help.
I need sleep after my hypo is over.

Caterpillar,
Thanks for responding.
I am on gliclazide
80 mg before breakfast and 80 mg before dinner.
AND
5 mg Trajenta (Linagliptin)

To address your original question, frequent hypos are certainly highly undesirable. That's no way to live a life. Whether they are harmful would depend on a number of factors. Examples of those factors would be how low the individual went, how long they remained hypo and whether they can recognise the hypo and treat it promptly.

Moving forward: You talk about having a snack between meals. Do you feel hungry, and therefore have something between meals? Do you eat between meals purely because you have to to prevent hypos?

What are your blood numbers like during the day, and are your hypos worse after any particular type of foods? How long have you been taking your current medication, and have you changed your general diet recently, around the time the hypos started?

Sorry there are so many questions there.

I have snack between meals to prevent hypo.
After changing my diet to lchf diet I experienced hypo twice a day if I forget to eat snacks.

Today's reading:

Fbg - 5.7
Before meal -4
2 hrs after - 7

I recognise hypo and quickly took 2 candies, and It is the fastest way to be normal again.

I have been taking the present medication for 7 months now.
I have changed to LCHF diet for 2 months already and it has significantly reduced my blood glucoose.

Before I was on metformin, but my GP changed to gliclazide because of my high creatinine level (100 +)

20 years ago One third of my pancrease was taken off because of my low blood sugar they called INSULINOMA.

Thanks for you reply.

So, I'm reading that you changed your diet after you were prescribed your current medication? If that is the case, my suggestion would be you revisit your Doctor to discuss things.

Are you saying your pre-meal reading above was before a meal, but you ate two candies before you had your meal, or was it some time before your meal?

If I were in your shoes, I would be very unhappy to have to increase my eating purely in order to prevent a hypo. Had I done, as you suggest, and changed my diet, I would be keen to explore if my medication could be adjusted a little or how else I could prevent hypos.

You may be overdoing it on the candies a bit. I do LCHF and I know my levela are low when I start sweating and shaking and feeling really weak but I will only correct with candies if it is in the 3's. I find that I can usually get enoight of a rise by eating some peanuts, chicken or cheese. The reason I rarely use candies to raise my BS sugar is to avoid the tiredness afterwards as they will send my BS sky high which is worse than being low.

Thanks 4ratbags
Thanks AndBreath
I will follow your ways and see how it goes.

Hi AmBreath,

My pre-meal reading above was my normal reading when I ate snacks in between meals like:
3 biscuits
or
1/2 mug of chickpeas
or
half a banana

Just now I was almost hypo again before dinner.
Can I stop taking my 80 mg of gliclazide?

I can't tell you, or even advise you to stop your Gliclazide, and nor can anyone else on this forum. You really do have to talk to your Doc about it. Perhaps you could catch up with him by phone, if appointments are a bit scarce.

This happened to me as I lost weight I had to feed the hypos which annoyed me enormously as I don't snack! You need to speak to your GP about reducing your meds - we on the forum can't tell you to do that you need to do it with the knowledge of your health care team. I am now on 40mg glic twice a day- half a tablet.

This is only my opinion but I think this is why glic has the reputation of causing weight gain I never had that problem as I reduced my meds as my weight came down

I also agree with @4ratbags that you may be over treating your hypos - is the 4 directly before a meal? If so I think your numbers are spot on and you don't really need to treat the 4 as you are going to eat anyway - I am often around 4 just before a meal and don't treat it - the only time I treat a hypo is if I am around 3.5 and it's more than 30 minutes before I'm due to eat again, then I would have a 5g carb snack or a couple of squares of dark choc.

Your doing well reducing your numbers but it can be a bit of a balancing act at times - you will get there just keep doing what your doing tweaking as you go:)

Thanks Lovinglife.
My bs reading of 4 is directly before my meal.
If below 4, I will have hypo.
My next appointment with my GP is Sep 20
I will ask her if I can reduce glyclicide from 80 mg to 40. before lunch and before dinner.
I am also on 5 mg linagliptin.
My HBA1C was 7.7 and now 6.9.
Thanks for the response and sharing your experience.
Is dark chocolate o.k. as it is sweet.

20th September is quite a long time to wait. Can you not see him/her before, or failing that, could you talk to them on the phone?

Dark chocolate is fine if it has a high cocoa content (over 70%, I believe). Chocolate isn't my thing, so you can have mine. :)

I think you must talk to you doctor ASAP about adjusting your medication as a T2 you should not be getting frequent hypos
