Hi my son who's type1 had a fit when he went into a diabetic coma I think it's a good idea to phone an ambulance if it happens again

I had a fit once during a hypo, I have no memory of fitting, which is probably a good thing as I would not like to remember it! I nearly had another fit when I saw the paramedics, I was not told that an ambulance had been called and nearly died of shock :lol:

I had a number of fits when low all of these were either at night or in the day and I fell asleep then would fit .

Oops didn't mean to send that yet. My boyfriend would somehow manage to feel me gel or jam without getting beaten up or the ambulance would be called. Haven't had one in years and hope it stays that way. Not much fun!!

Hi, last time I fainted, due to hypo, I had a fit. I guess it's a sign of your brain suffering due to lacking of sugar.

most hypos I end up fitting! as if having a hypo didnt make you feel awful enough you then have to deal with the post ictal state [THUMBS DOWN SIGN]

Wow I've never heard of this! I had a really bad hypo once where I went down to 0.7 and my boyfriend came home to find me face down on the kitchen floor!

What does a fit feel like? I've never had one (not that I'm aware of) thanks, Laura

Hi, I am a Type1 and occasionaly fit durring a Hypo. My boyfriend first wittnessed me fitting about three years ago durring the night, he called the ambulance and they were able to check my sugar and I came round. The problem I have is that I often do not realise my sugar is low, I was diagnosed when I was 24 which was 15 years ago. I am taking medication for the epilepsy but I do not think it has an effect as I do not think I suffer from epilepsy as such because it is only when I have low blood sugar that it happens.

I had a fit a couple of times when having a low blood sugar during my teenage years but not since then. They always accompanied not having woken up from being asleep whilst going hypo. All other times I recognise the symptoms of the hypo and treat it before I get low enough to get to the 'fitting' stage.

I don't think it's 'common' as such but it does happen and I know I always felt awful for a few days afterwards when it happened to me, like my limbs were super heavy when I tried to move and I also bit my tongue badly or had injuries from bashing into furniture.

I thought a fit usually only happens when the blood sugar gets VERY low.... like down below 2.0 rather than just, say, 3.2 for example, which for a lot of diabetics is fairly 'treatable' with the normal methods. Are you not getting hypo symptoms when your sugar levels drop below 4? Or is it that you're having a fit at these 'higher' low levels? (I hope that made sense!)

I have had fits several times with night time hypos ie when it's VERY low and hypo has not been detected. It is not uncommon at all - search the net and you will find lots of examples. Giving medication for epilepsy sounds crazy to me.... Re- check with a specialist without delay!!!

I am not sure these are "fits" in the normal sense of the word such as epileptics have. I have had many of these, normally during the night with severe hypos. I have smashed my face up a few times by falling out of bed and banging furniture.

I believe that adrenaline has a part to play in this as the liver is trying to release stored glucose to counteract the low sugar levels. What then happens is an extreme version of a hypo with shaking, sweating, twitching etc but on an extreme level. The normal hypo signs are due to adrenaline release which is similar to fight or flight responses when threatened. I also sweat to such an extent during these hypos that my bed linen needs to be changed as it is actually dripping (not nice).

I am not a doctor however and this may not be correct but I seem to have picked this up from somewhere and it does make sense if it is correct.

As people above said I can get quite depressed for a day or so after these and also immediately afterwards I will become extremely cold and shiver uncontrollably for an hour or so. This may be due to shock setting in for a period of time. They are physically and mentally very traumatic events.

However I concur that it giving epilepsy medication is ridiculous if you only suffer these during hypos and have no previous history of epilepsy.

I've had a couple of fits when low but like the other people only when extremely low ie below 1.7. I always get depressed after a big hypo, the day I got married I woke up really low and my best friend got my hubby as he's the only one I respond to in that state and who can sort me out without panicking! When I came round I remember crying and apologising to him and feeling pretty ****** for the next few hours while everyone else was running round really happy. A word of warning though If you drive your Dr could be gaining evidence to take your licence away through calling for an ambulance every time you fit, as this suggests you need assistance and that's grounds for getting your license revoked. Is it every time you go low you fit or is it just really bad hypos? I agree with the other posts above about the epilepsy meds don't think it's appropriate if there aren't other signs or symptoms.
