hypos...

hi guys . please send your advice or thoughts.
I was diet controlled for a year or so then put onto metformin Mr 500mg daily and increased to 1000mg daily. This was fine till a review with my nurse who said my hba1c could be better and increased to 1500mg daily. Horrors! Side effects of sleep disturbances and tiredness etc. So I went to the gp and asked for another blood test and review. Hba1c not down so stopped off the extra 500 mg and started on gliclazide 40mg . I need this reviewed next month but so far am loving it.
BUT getting used to being low is confuzzling the heck out of me. I used to test on occasion to see if I had overdosed carbs so I could play with my diet if needed. I figured I was doing the pre breakfast glucose dump and that sometimes porridge gave me a + 2 hour figure of 7-8 and other times it was 10 plus so not consistent. Grapes send me through the roof... But chocolate doesn't! Too much. Now I am going low yet sometimes feel rough but in the 5-6.6 range and better at 2.9! Could I still be glucose dumping? My work schedule has meant that if I have started to feel dodgy it may not be immediately possible to get to a snack, and sometimes I have walked off the job to find food. I do not know what to eat to stay stable because the same breakfast is fine one day and not the next with no appreciable difference in exercise.
Thanks in advance:-)

Hi Missy,

A low-carb high-fat diet might help to even out your blood sugar readings. It's a great diet for getting rid of blood sugar swings. There's lots of good advice on the forum if you feel like giving this a go.

Also, it would be a good idea, while at work, or at any time really, always to have a carbohydrate snack with you in case of a hypo. Some glucose tablets, for example.

As for your blood sugar, my mind boggles when I try to analyse my own results and how to react to them, so I'm no good at giving advice on this. No doubt someone will come along here soon to help. :)

"feel rough but in the 5-6.6 range and better at 2.9!"
as you know gliclazide can cause hypos and anything under 4 is hypo and you need to test regularly, the Dr should have given you a batch of strips
ok I'm guessing but you are hypo aware around 5.5 for you at this point, but not hypo aware when you are hypo at 2.9 and need to be treated. If it was me I'd get ready to treat around the 5,5 till you are more settled. carry the glucose lollies for quick fix and then find more food
some one should know what's what and be along shortly and you may need to see the Dr about reducing your meds
