If your ferritin is high, then I suggest that you do a google for something called haemocrhromatosis, also called Bronze Diabetes.
It is usually caused by carrying genes that prevent your body from removing excess iron from your bloodstream, which means that the iron builds up a bit, and if it gets high enough, can cause damage to other organs and even cause diabetes.
Of course, there are a lot of variables there. There are several different genes which can cause this condition, and the build up of excess iron can be slight (which is what I have) all the way up to very high. Levels tend to get higher with age, with proplems rarely showing up until the person has reached their 50s-60s and upwards. Particularly post menopause for women.
I would suggest that you get the result of your ferritin test from your surgery, so that you have it for comparison with future tests.
There is actually a huge range that counts as 'normal' with ferritin. And then a fair leeway before the damage starts. And the treatment for high ferritin is blindingly simple for most people - occasional blood lettings.
So please do not start worriting or panicking at this stage.
I have had high ferritin levels for the last 2 tests, and my doc is just keeping an eye on it, with no further action at this point.
If your second result is also high, or higher, there is a well organised treatment pathway.
