Hi everybody,
I am keeping off bread rice etc! keeping low carb! my blood sugar dropped earlier from 8.6 down to 5.1, so i decided to treat myself to a little natural yougut that was it! I had two tablespoon's! with half a apple, checked my blood sugar two hours later had shoot from 5.1 up to 11.1 in 2 hours!
I thought that my blood sugar seemed low enough i had been out for a nice walk in the forest and that had dropped my sugar alot! but even this sent my blood sugar through the roof!
my fiancee looked at the natural yougut and it was from marks and spencer and it was low carb, the whole pot was no more than 50, there is over 3/4 of the pot left!
i had skipped breakfast as had a hospital appointment this morning for my eyes yet again!
i was just wondering any reasons why it shot up so much?

The apple could be part of the problem. Some varieties are very high in sugar. Also if your Bg is a bit on the high side, exercise can send it up rather than down

Apples are only about 12 - 17 carbs and rate around 30 on the GI table. Not high at all. They are an excellent snack for lo-carbers and should be eaten with the skin on as well. this can slow down the absorption rate. Did you peel yours first ?

Ken

Hi ken
I always peel the apples! As i choke on the skins if i don't! I though it was no more than half the apple, and low carb yougut! I thought that it would be a nice treat as blood sugar ahd gone down to below 6!
I thought that because i can't drink milk as i get ill! I thought that i had missed breakfast and lunch so that would of made a good snack!
i can't see the carbs on the side of item's, as they are so smal and having bad eyesight means i have someone with me who tells me what the carb are!

It should be a good snack ?

An Apple and perhaps some cheese go well together and are very low in carbs.
There does seem to be some discrepancy here. Are you sure the Yoghurt is really lo-carb and low sugar ? The only other thing I can think of is that maybe the strip was contaminated and the reading was false ? Make sure you wash your hands first - any juice on your fingers will affect the readings.

I too have difficulty reading small print so carry a small magnifying glass everywhere I go. Just fits in a pocket. At least then YOU can check out the labels.

A thought occurs. You had had no breakfast or lunch you say and then went out for a walk.therefore the energy you required for that walk would have come from glucose from your liver, raising your BG levels. On top of this you had the apple/yogurt raising it some more. This is just a possible explanation to what happened. You really should try eating at breakfast and lunch time to keep the BG levels more stable perhaps.

I have just checked the tub of yougut it says, 50g of carbs per 100mg! there is still 3/4 of the tub left! It says low sugar as well! I thought that it would be a good low carb snack!
I know that i have just checked my blood sugar now 4 3/4 hours after eaten blood sugar has dropped down to 7.2, i know that i have started to keep a chart of my blood sugars to take to the diabettic nurse with me on the 20th!
i am not eating anything that i should not be at least i think!
No bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, etc anything with high sugar no chocolate sweets etc!
I have a slice of cheese like catherdral city the low fat one with half a apple peeled! i have that before bed and seem to be working waking up and so far these last two morning's blood sugars have not been above 8! This morning was sitting at 6.2 i felt that was very good the way that they have been up and all over the place of late!

hi sue,
I have been having breakfast and lunch! but been in hospital having tests from early morning then i had some letters to post! i walked down to local post box! i forgot about the liver dump!
i was in such a rush this morning i forgot all about eating!

Yoghurt - 50g carbs. My main meal contains less than that!
I think you should get your friend the magnifying glass .

Hi ken,
most of the tub is left in there! Ah he is okay he is still getting used to it at mo! He said that the whole thing contained 50g of carbs! I thought give it a shot!
I made sheppards pie earlier instead of using potatoes, i boiled califlower and mashed that and put on top!
No one knew the difference but it is so much more tasty! I tricked everybody into eating it! everybody asked for more then when i said califlower on top they all said no way! must admit never thought of it before!

Sandy.

Did I laugh.

It's trial and error. We've all been there. Better luck next time.

Cheers
Ken

Of course your blood sugar had shot up, Sandy. Now you know why Dr Richard Bernstein bans ALL fruit from his lo-carb regime.

50g carbs is more than I eat in a day and sometimes 2 days. Apples can be a bit high. I usually share a nice big one with T1 husband as dessert. I probably get about 10 carbs from it. Not low, but I love them.

The 50g carbs was if i ate the whole tub, which i didnot! I ate only two tablespoons if that!
i have had wraps tonight! No i cheated, I left some lettice leafs out and rolled my chicken and veg into them! Not too bad! still miss the wrap bases as they tasted so yummy!
I must admit today, i have had a good day! Had a piece of whole grain toast for breastfast with boiled egg! Lunch was a salad with a few chopped bits of chicken in no skin!
Dinner was wraps! My blood sugar has not gone above 7 today so i am pleased with myself!
Even though i had temptation today! My mum has bought me a thortons easter egg with my name on it! It keeps screaming to me! Eat me eat me! You know you want a bit of me go on give me a try you will like me!
i have put it into another room! so i wont be tempted to try some!
I just hope that i can keep the temptation away with it screaming Eat me!

Good for you Sandy.

I understand that temptation. The best thing to do is kill the egg, stop it from screaming , use pieces of the egg as rewards to self for meeting or beating targets - you've earned them.

Regards, Tubs.

Hi Tubs
i thought of that! But it looks so nice with the words, sandy i love you mum! It looks so nice!
She says it is thortons diabettic chocolate, i am thinking that is not much different to normal chocolate?
I want to break it! But then it might cry! because i smashed it! had a weigh in today, once again i have lost another 3lbs! the nurse said I am doing well!
She said how is the diet going, I said i have type 2 diabetes! she answered Oh i did not know! I thought be off with you!
it was bad enough april fools day when my mum told me she was pregnant! Oh boy i fell for that one! she is type 1 and after having me because i was a big baby! And she was 41 she had to have a hysterectomy! That may not be the right spelling but i tried!
Silly me fell right into that one! April fool or what!

Hi, i am fairly new to all this but I never used to eat breakfast and when I was diagnosed I carried on doing so as I thought the old starvation would help the BS but it remained pretty high. It could be the old liver dump?
Like people say it's trial and error so maybe you could try it again on a 'normal' day of eating and see if it has the same effect. I can look after the egg for you if you want

Hi samcogle,
Would i get the egg back or like a magic trick would it be gone?
I bet you could make the egg disappear!
Thing is never really eaten chocolate, my mum knows this! so why she chose this year to buy me a egg i will never know but that is mums for you i suppose! Bless her i would not be without her!

Hi Sandy,

The difference between Thorntons ordinary chocolate and diabetic chocolate is that the ordinary chocolate is sweetened with sugar. The diabetic chocolate is sweetened with laxatives! No kidding!! So if you do eat it, either have very small pieces or make sure no-one gets between you and the loo door!!!
