Type of diabetes
Treatment type
Tablets (oral)
T2 for 8 years, taking Gliclazide and Metformin, one year ago began taking Insulin, 2 x daily.
I also have IBS, and believe it or not my triggers for pain and severe diarrhoea, are fruit and veg.
Recently I had to have my anti-depressants changed and Doc warned that the new tabs would cause
hunger.
This morning I had 2 Weetabix with ss milk, and 2 hours later BS was 18.6 (was 7 fasting).
I have appointments with Diabetic Clinic and to have bloods checks, but I am really hungry and
have no idea what to eat.
All advice gratefully received.

Many people find that they cannot cope with cereals, generally the body can break down the carbs quickly. If this is happening to you, it could be one reason for a sugar spike. Was this morning worse than normal though?

Porridge oats are slower burning - same amount of carbs but they take longer to digest. If you have time to cook for breakfast - try an egg or two, the carbohydrate content is negligible.

Thanks so much, I do have time to cook, don't believe that eggs without bread would be enough to satisfy my hunger.

As @urbanracer says, eggs. I love eggs. Fried, scrambled, boiled, omelette. Especially with a couple of rashers of bacon. Or high meat content sausages.

I can't tolerate porridge, weetabix or shredded wheat anymore so only have them very occasionally.
I would love this type of breakfast, but wouldn't it lead to weight gain, which I struggle with (too much weight that is)

Lidl sell an acceptable High Protein roll that has lowish carb, and I find these to be very filling. I bulk buy and freeze them till required. Makes a reasonable substitute for potato too. Can cause discomfort for denture wearers, though.
Edit to add: Not sure how these are for IBS sufferers, since they do have seeds and fibre.

Much better toasted with tons of butter :)

No, it will not lead to weight gain PROVIDED you eat low carb.
Low carb plus higher fat will not make you gain weight, in fact it should help you lose weight.
High carb with high fat will make you gain weight.

A good old fry up is a great meal for us. Eggs, bacon, high meat sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms and half a Lidl HP roll toasted with butter. What could be nicer! I have it for lunch rather than breakfast.

Proper poridge oats are low GI, but beware of 'instant oat' types of meal, usually marketed as 2 mins micowave type in individual sachets. These can be 'worrisome' for a diabetic. Beware also of meal replacements such as Complan and meals aimed at convalescent care that come in powder form. Protein shakes and whey products spike me badly, but some here have used whey successfully to make a form of LC bread.

As with everything, Eat to your meter, and test.

I am all over the egg based breakfast scene now. Shredded Wheat had my BS go through the roof, ditched all cereal breakfasts now, not worth it. Feels odd making a cooked eggy brekkie but after reading all about LCHF I know it's the way for me to go.

Will do full fry up today, and let you know the results - I don't eat until I have been up for a while, usually around 9.30 am, Fasting BS was 8.
Cereals heading to the bin, then on to investigate lchf,
Thanks to everyone for the advice

Had Bacon/Eggs at 0930, Post Prandial 9.5

As mentioned in my previous post, my BS 2 hrs after Bacon/Eggs was 9.5, BUT I had all the symptoms of a hypo, sweating, shaking, feeling 'weird' - anyone know why this should happen?

Those symptoms are also similar to high BS.
What were you immediately before eating?

Could be what we call a pseudo hypo. If you have been running for a while with high BS, then a sudden drop in levels can cause this type of reaction. If so then it should go away as your body gets to accept that the bounty days are over. I would NOT advise treating it as a true hypo, and taking carbs to compensate, since this is probably not necessary. If symptoms persist, then you may need to call a Dr. We are all different. But your post prandial is certainly not within sight of a hypo, so unless it was a gross misread, then things are looking better in that regard.

Following advice from a USA surgery ($7 per month) I don't eat bread, pasta, milk or potatoes and I lost over 3 stones. My HBA1C dropped to 6.3 from 10.8. I'd recommend Lizi's Granola with Yoghurt for breakfast (On sale in Tesco).
I've also got a pacemaker now which helps and my leg ulcers are well on the mend.

I have found that eating cereal really raises my bs too. I have tried several thinking that perhaps a granola type labeled "natural" (which means nothing) would be better, but after 1/2 cup without milk, my bs spiked like crazy. Snack cereal bars gave the same result.

Fortunately, I have found a bread that doesn't spike me and I really like it. It is a German bread - Knonenbrot Bauern Schwarzbrot. It is not exactly low carb, with 39 g of carbs per 100 g serving, but it seems to breakdown slower. Everyone is different and what works for me may not for you, but you might want to try it
