I am type 1 and I take Humalog with meals and 22 units of Lantus before bed but last night I was really tired because I had a long day I got home and I had something to eat and I had my humalog and about 8pm I decided to go to bed and I was going to get up about 9.30 to watch something on TV and to take my Lantus and I put my alarm on but I never woke up until 7am this morning lol so I havn't had any Lantus and my BG this morning was 14.0 so I had some breakfast and took my humalog. Will my blood sugars be high today because of missing my Lantus or will they be ok because I have took the humalog this morning

Hi jodie,

Yes, your blood sugars will run high without the Lantus. It is designed to keep your blood sugar level from rising while you're not eating, such as when you're asleep, for example. The Humalog is fast acting and designed to counter the rise in blood sugar from the food you have eaten.
The Humalog will be less effective because a proportion of it will be used up trying to bring your high blood sugar down.
In your shoes, I'd take some Lantus first thing in the morning, to prevent your blood sugars from creeping up throughout the day. I can't tell you exactly how much Lantus to take, but a half-dose, for example, would help the Humalog to do it's job today. You will still have to take a 'correction dose' of Humalog in order to bring your BS into line, but don't wait until tonight before you take your next dose of Lantus.
It might be a good opportunity to begin splitting your Lantus dose, actually. Many people find it doesn't actually last for 24 hours and their blood sugars are more stable if they inject a half dose at night and the balance the following morning. This morning could be your first half-dose!

Keep testing every couple of hours today until your numbers come back into line, and good luck!

All the best,

fergus

I've done this a couple of times before and have taken half my lantus dose in the morning and then carried on as normal at 10pm when i usually take it. this has worked for me in the past.

When this subject comes up though the general advice is usually to take small injections of humalog every few hours to correct the highs, so that there isn't overlapping basal doses which could cause hypo's in the night.

whatever you decide to do, test often and check that your blood sugars aren't getting too high.

I agree with everything that's been said already, but I would add that without your 'background' insulin (ie Lantus), not only will your BS run higher, but you are also at greater risk of becoming ketotic. So I would deffo have some Lantus sooner rather than later, and test for ketones.

HI jodie, you don't need to take lantus at night. If it's got the flat profile it claims it shouldn't matter if you take it in the morning instead of the evening. You'll be more alert and less likely to forget to take it.
Seriously if it's better for you, you CAN take it in the morning.
Good luck
Jus
