I don't think its working for me

Pizza (makes my BG go through the roof), Pasta & potatoes.
Hi all,

Been type 2 for 2 months, eating sensibly and weight has been coming off nicely at a couple of pounds per week, My hba1c has dropped from 16 in Januray to 7 in february which is much better.

I've got hold of the collins carb counter and been low carbing for about 3 weeks, first week or so down to 20g per day, last week, up to 30g per day.

Whilst BG is good, i am having to go to bed early as i am hungry in the evening and trying to stop snacking. I have put 1/2 stone on in the 3 weeks of low carbing, I don't go to the Loo properly any more and certainly not regularly.

My waking BG has been down to 2.3 and i have reduced my metformin for 3 to 2 to try and stop this.

Today i have not counted the carbs just avoided pasta, bread, crisps, potatoes etc and have felt better for it.

I am thinking that its not working for me and feel quite low as i have to lose about 3 stone and don't know what to do next. The Diabetic nurse is telling me to eat pasta and starchy stuff but I know this is not right as my BG goes through the roof when i do.

Are you able to let us know what sort of things you eat in a day?
There are posters here who have been restricting their carb intake for ten years so we may be able to help you.

Looks as if low carb diet control is promising but needs adapting for you. I eat plenty of root & red & green veg; I add wheat bran & oat bran to my ground almond 'porridge' & have about 30 g worth of fruit. Hope that helps.
 
Hi blokefromstoke.

It sounds to me as if you have tried to go too low carb. There is a difference between cutting the carbs and low carb and sometime you need to cut bit by bit, testing all the while.

You say that today you felt better as you just cut out the starchy carbs and I think that is in line with what I have said above. I don't always count the carbs unless I feel that I need more or less than I have had and I feel the need to check, it isn't critical to me as I am not trying to lose weight as such, however it happens anyway! :roll:

You shouldn't be hungry after the first three days or so. You will need to snack on a few nuts, very, very well chewed also helps, or a small piece of cheese, again nibbled and well chewed. You can also eat celery, peppers or mushrooms etc. or meat like cold chicken or ham. These foods sholdn't make any appreciable difference to your BG levels.

Don't give up just be more gentle with yourself.
 
as synonym says, you can eat other things you know, cheese/meat/nuts, just dont go silly with it. You can also be eating too LITTLE! My wife does this, and wonders why she doesnt shift as much weight as i do, but she only has 1 or 2 meals a day, whereas i have 3 plus i snack on nuts and cheese. the toilet issue is down to you not eating the tons of carbs, and are eating better stuff so your body takes all the nutrients out, and there is less waste product. I used to go every day, and now its more like every 3 days, if that :shock: It was a bit of a shock to begin with, but you do get used to it.

You and I have been diagnosed just within the space of a few weeks apart by the looks of things.

I am low carbing, but not too stringently (not measuring portion sizes or counting carbs, etc), just eating healthily.

This posting I've made earlier this morning may help you and give you some new tips or ideas.

Please note however, I'm diet only for now, no meds or insulin.

the reason your wife isn't losing weight as fast as you, could simply be that you are male and she female( I assume :lol: )
Men lose faster almost always.
I keep hearing that you stop losing if you don't eat enough, but I'm having long term trouble losig at the moment ( and I have about 2 - 3 stone to go and Iexercise regularly. I cannot see how eating MORE would make me lose

It is really strange how this happens and yet it does seem to. If I eat very, very little my weight seems to steady and stay the same but if I have what my husband terms 'a good blowout' ( :shock: ) my weight falls off.
 
Hi all,

Thanks for all the advice, feeling a lot better now. I have started watching my carbs instead of massively reducing them. I was eating around 20g per day, i have now relaxed this to about 60g per day. I am also watching the calories as well, trying to stay below 1500 Kcals per day.

lost about a pound this week, toilet habits regular again, bloods no higher than 6 and have good enrgy levels again.

Was really silly at work on Friday where i had 2 slices of pizza, felt like i was going to die. I didn't have my blood monitor with me, so don't know where i was but i won't be doing it again.

I have dropped overall from 42 inch waist to 38 inch, I even bought a pair of jeans today at 36 inch, so i seem to be getting 'smaller' just the weight is coming off real slow. I reckon i have about another 3 stone to lose to get to where i was on my wedding day 20 years ago.

Its going to be a long hard slog I reckon. I 'discovered' butternut squash today which i had with my sunday dinner instead of peas and potatoes. On the face of it, squash seems great and tastes lovely. is it too good to be true?

My experience is very similar to yours.

Pre diagnosis my weight fluctuated at around the 18 and a half stone mark. Last time I jumped on the scales I was down to 16 stone.

Like you, I now am noticeably smaller; down from a 44 to a 38 inch waist and my neck size on shirts has dropped by 1/2 a size too. To me, your actual weight is secondary to your size and proportions. Your body is benefiting from humping less weight around everyday and your waist and neck sizes tell you you are losing weight.

I had a similar experience to your pizza one the other day too, when I ordered pitta and houmous at a hotel I was visiting and it came to me on white, not wholemeal pitta. Stupidly I ate it and the "rush" was immediate - light headed and my face was flushed. I won't do that again in a hurry either. :lol:

I discovered butternut squash and celeriac at the same time as each other and if I don't go mad, it suits me fine.
Hana: isn't it perhaps the case that if you eat too little your body thinks it's being starved so goes into fat-preservation mode? I heard something like that and it sort of makes sense and is supported anecdotally by the fact that after losing serious amounts of weight after a typhoid jab made me very ill, I then put on weight ridiculously whilst not eating more than before.
re toilet habits -)) I think they're less affected if you eat more fat, though I know there are people who low carb without upping their fat intake. Otherwise I guess you just adapt to a new routine!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your support - you are all lovely. I have upped my carbs this week to about 60g and also limited my dialy cals to about 1500. I have managed to lose about 3 pounds this week and have felt much better in myself.

I have also gone back onto 3 metformin per day after the nurse told me a fortnight ago to drop to 2. My BG levels went from being farely constant and never above 7 to all over the place and I felt really wierd. I have told the Nurse I've gone back up to 3 and they told me to bear with 2 and I would settle down. Quite frankly I am not putting up with my BG's levels all over the place and not feeling right for the sake of one tablet so will carry on at 3.

I have lost 3 stone now since christmas and 6 inches off my waist. Its lovely and really helps with self esteem (I have a very low opinion of myself) when people say how well I look but on a serious note, It is costing me a fortune on clothes. I am loathe to spend the money as I intend losing more. I have 5 lovely work suits but look rediculous if i wear any of them. As well as the trousers falling down,the jackets bury me.

My biggest life changes have been eating at regular times, not eating potatoes, rice, bread, pasta, biscuits, sweets etc or alcohol.

I am thinking whether to just give up with the drink and declare myself teetotal - i have been off it for 3 months and its not bothered me.

Anyway, sorry to waffle.

Hi Carl

Take your suits and get them altered and save your pennies for the day when you decide you have 'arrived'! Try the place where you originally bought them or if they don't do it there are some dry cleaning firms which offer this service or even a small 'alterations' shop. Can't have your trousers falling down! :shock:
 
About to embark on low carb\ atkins type eating plan.
Is it Ok with Metformin, I'm only on the minimum dose of 1 tab twice daily.
i'm 5' 10" and weight is 15 st 12. So really need to lost 3 stone-ish.
How does it affect cholestorol as mines is way too high (over 6).
 

I think your question got lost somehow but judging by what others say on here about metformin it would seem that it only helps but does not do everything for you.

Cutting the carbs has certainly worked for me!
