My ketones on Thursday was 5.7, I couldn't check my blood glucose as my machine was broken and had to use someone else's for checking ketones. Today my ketones were 3.1, but when I checked my blood glucose levels (as I got a new meter), they were 11.8 (which is where I was told I am suppose to be) I was told that when my ketones were high it means my blood glucose levels are high. So I don't understand why they were high when my blood glucose wasn't??? Can someone explain this? I have been taking my insulin like advised.

Hello @Alex_B.

I'll start by asking that your BGL's have been set and decided by your doctors?

Unless you're following a ketosis style diet - then your ketone levels are far too high - all of them! It's imperative that you get in touch with your doctor asap.

Ketones can be "high" without high BG - that's called dietary ketosis and is a different ballgame altogether. What you were probably told by your doctors is that high ketones and high BG means DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis). That much is true; and should be avoided at all costs. DKA can be avoided by taking the correct amount of insulin (both basal; and bolus to cover meals) - something which I feel you're not doing.

Feel free to fire me a PM if you'd rather chat privately.

Hey, @Alex_B

I've got nothing to add to Grant's excellent advice, but I wanted to pop along and send you a wave and a hug. All these numbers we have to deal with. Do take Grant up on his offer - I'm not T1 so I can't give any kind of input, but from what I've read something doesn't seem quite right.

Hang in there, eh? And have a quick look at this link:
