I visited the Dr tonight and he said I need to go onto medication. I have been getting blood tests every 2-3 months and my Hb1ac have been 6.5, 6.6, 6.9, 7.2 and 6.5 over the last year. I have been getting high morning readings- from 8.5 up to almost 12 over the past few weeks. The Dr said I have to start taking Metformin I am to take 1/2 tablet with breakfast, mid day meal and evening meal. 1275 mg a day. He said not to take cholesterol tablets yet as my liver plays up with pills and my cholesterol was ok. I have been given blood pressure pills to ´protect my kidneys´ as the specialist put it, my blood pressure is good anyway, so it is perfect now
I bought the metformin tablets at the chemist tonight, expecting to pay loads, 1.95€ for 50 tablets We finish with the private Dr at the end of the year, after that it is the local GP (we have just been taken on for the Spanish NHS )
He said I was to test my bloods, but did not say when, is just mornings sufficient? We do not get testing strips here at this practice, the Dr said I have to buy my own. I have the Code Free tester, so not too bad for cost.

Hi. Metformin is a very low cost drug which is good news. The SR version does cost more but hopefully you won't need that. I would test 2 hours after a typical meal to see what foods affect you. Metformin won't make a great difference to your blood sugar but is a good start with diet doing the rest.

After just 3 days taking Metformin my morning readings are down to 6 I have suffered with a very gurgling tummy for 3 days, it has sounded like a blocked drain, hopefully that feeling will wear off. I go to see the GP on Thursday morning, to say that the private GP that has been treating me for 4-5 years has put me onto medication..... we finish with the private Dr on 31st December.
