Type 1 I injected the wrong insulin

I've recently been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and slowly getting my head around it all. However tonight I have injected myself with 7 units of Novorapid instead of 9 units of my bedtime Lantus. My blood sugar readings were 6.1 prior to injecting. Should I be worried? Should I still take the Lantus? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank yiu

Do you carb count? Work out how many grams of carbs 7 units of novorapid would cover for you and eat that in a mixture of fast acting and slower acting carbs. I probably would take the lantus and inject it in the same place I'd done the in error novorapid as that should slow the novorapid action.

Set an alarm to do some testing in th nigh, keep hypo treatments handy.

You need to eat enough carbs now to cover the novorapid. Do you carb count? I'm on a 1unit to 10g carb ratio. With an accidental 7 units I'd need to eat 70g carbs.
Don't go to sleep without eating as your BG will decrease. Might be worth setting an alarm for every couple of hours to check it isn't going too low.

And when did you last have the novorapid before the accidental dose? If within 3-5 hours that may still be having an effect still, so you'll need to eat more carbs again to cover that.

Fiddly, but insulin mistakes like this are quite common.

Generally, one should not stop the long acting, so I would give the Lantus as normal.

I have little to add to the novorapid advice above - have enough CHO to cover the novorapid and make sure glucose level OK before bed and check (I'd need an alarm clock) not low at 1-2 hours later and at 3.00 am-ish which is when night time hypos happen.

How to stop it happening again? Many of my patients on basal bolus with bedtime basal keep the basal by the bed and bolus wherever they eat.

I would not inject the two insulins in the same place at the same time normally (although it might have been quite interesting here) cos the lantus is slightly acidic to keep it in solution, but the novorapid is neutral pH and will be damaged by the acidic lantus. Not sure how much of an effect this is in real life, though.

Hope you are OK

Best wishes
