So I have a kidney infection. I started taking antibiotics on Thursday, so far I've had 8. I thought today I was finally starting to feel better. I tidied up and hoovered and I was fine. I ate dinner and was fine. Now about an hour ago I ate a sandwich and now I feel so sick. I might need to be sick. I don't know what to do...

hey @Chloesnavy
if you feel really poorly -- do you have anyone there with you ?
after the 4th day you should start to feel better with antibiotics.
if this continues this evening you really should ring your GP out of hours or 111

Thank you. And...Sadly not, the boyfriend is at work for another two hours I've felt fine all day, a bit groggy and tired, and my side has hurt a little but not much. I felt a little sick this morning but not this bad. I don't want to be sick but feel I have to. Shall I wait until the morning? I have an interview on Tuesday too!

If you're really worried then please ring 111 it's what it's there for. Take care hope things improve very soon

more good advice has arrived in the last couple minutes--
it hasn't gone away after 4 days , so it would be worth ringing 111 for advice.
do check bloods as well to ensure you are not too high.

there will be a few of us on through the evening

Test your BS and test for ketones. Illness plus antibiotics can cause high sugars and they can make you feel sick. If you don't feel right, call 111.

I really recommend resting. Usually as Type 1s we rush about keeping active to keep our BS in range, but illness is one time when you may very well need to stop and just rest. Make sure you're drinking enough bland fluids too.

Time taken resting now will benefit you in the long run as your body should shake it off quicker. Keep warm and sit down with your meter and plenty of water (and glucose in case of lows).

My blood sugar and ketones are all fine and I'm drinking plenty of water too. I've woken up this morning still not feeling 100%. Maybe I should ring 111

Do you still have the UTI symptoms, or more a general "off" with a tummy that is just telling you it's not happy? Which antibiotics has your Doctor put you on Chloesnavy?

Not so long ago, I had a UTI and I swear the antibiotics made me feel more rough than the UTI, and it lingered for 3 or 4 days after I finished the course.

If you continue to be concerned (which your post this mornring suggests you are), then you should either ring 111 or put a call into your surgery. Your Doc would know what your dip test showed when they prescribed the meds. My understanding is if a single course of antibiotics doesn't shift it, they'll want to take a sample to send off to grow the bug culture to ensure the next hit of antibiotics is closely matched to the bugs they're fighting.

My personal thoughts on a Monday might be to call the Surgery as 111 won't (I believe) have access to your medical records, or be able to send of any additional samples for culture in the lab.

I hope you feel better soon.

Having had a series of UTI and kidney infections one after other a few years ago, you have my sympathy! I was shocked at just how ill UTIs can make us.
Get a sample sent down to Doctor's office and let them know how you are feeling, it sounds like the antibiotics you are on aren't clearing things up. As others have said, drink plenty of water. Avoid tea/coffee, caffeinated and carbonated drinks and green tea, which irritate the bladder. From memory, citrus fruit isn't great either; but check with a reputable source first.

Hi @Chloesnavy - ditto what @AndBreathe says about the sample being lab-tested - I came down with a kidney infection on August 10th. It's now October 10th and I'm hoping to get back to work properly later this week. This week.

Successive samples of mine were sent off to the lab - and the third lot of antibiotics were effective. That meant I had been untreated for nearly two weeks in the meantime. I think that is what has made me so feeble for so long.

@Chloesnavy I'm not trying to freak you out, but it's really important that you find out that you're on the right antibiotic for the bug, and do cut yourself some slack and allow your body time to rest and recover. I was either visiting or ringing the doctor weekly over the summer to ask why I wasn't feeling better - and was eventually told that yes, feeling so unwell so long after the infection had cleared was in fact normal after such a severe infection.

My pump came into its own when I had sky-high sugars from the infection. Most days I was running a basal rate of around 180% most of the time.

Regarding the feeling sick - that sounds very familiar. After eating anything I would feel utterly dreadful - I put that down to my body not being able to cope with fighting off the infection and trying to digest food at the same time. Take it slowly, and please delegate or postpone any more hoovering! If you need to rest, you need to rest. Eat and drink and sleep.

I know you've got an interview. I'm wishing you all the best with that, but might they be willing to postpone it for a little while?

Do take care, you will be fine in time, I promise.

Love Snapsy xxx

Thank you for all the helpful, wonderful comments. So do I just ring my doctors and ask what was in my wee sample?
I want to postpone the interview but I'm worried, because basically I had an interview with them a few months ago but couldn't go due to a miscarriage. I was really gutted and they said I can always try again in the future. So I feel if i ring them and ask to postpone it, they'll just think, "I can't be bothered with this girl" haha. the symptoms are still pretty much there... My side isn't painful but it feels quite uncomfortable, like I have to lay on it. And I feel a bit sicky, but not enough to be sick. It's very odd

Awwww @Chloesnavy I'm so sorry to hear about your miscarriage, and can understand how a second potential interview postponement therefore feels difficult. How are you feeling today? Any better? If you're beginning to feel better I'm sure adrenaline will help you through it tomorrow!

I'd suggest ringing the doctor to ask if they have the result of the culture and can they therefore confirm that the antibiotic you are on is effective for the bug they've identified from the culture. If it isn't - in which case I would hope they will be calling you ASAP anyway - they will give you a different antibiotic that is effective.

Do drink lots, and rest lots. Yoghurt is very good for replacing the good bugs in your body that are being killed off by the antibiotics. Paracetamol for the pain. Sleep. Netflix. Tempting but easy food (warm soup?). Test lots.

Be kind to yourself - when you're poorly, it's okay to be resting! Give yourself permission.

Hope you're feeling okay, @Chloesnavy .

Shall be thinking of you tomorrow - hope it all goes well!

In an ironic and gutting twist of fate I had cause (familiar backache, feeling shivery) to take a sample of my own to the docs' this evening. Came home with a 7-day course of antibiotics.... So cross as I haven't 100% got over the previous bout!

Oh no! I hope you're okay that's so typical isn't it? Hopefully it sorts you out for good!
I'm being very nervous today haha!
