.....I was diagnosed with Diabetes Type 2 fifteen years ago....I started off with metformin but they didn't agree with me and anyway I managed to control it by my diet. After thirteen years I couldn't and am on metformin SR 500 twice a day.

During that time I lost two stone which I've kept off. I wasn't deliberately dieting, just ate more healthily. However I want to lose another stone and a half so I have been on the 5 : 2 diet and I'm genuinely amazed at the results, its not so much the weight I'm losing but my BS levels even the days I'm not fasting...I have that so called 'dawn phenomenon' ~ my BS levels used to be around 9 to high 10s in the morning, they're now between 6 and high sevens....

I told my DN I was going to try this diet ~ she said she hadn't heard of it [!] but I could if I wanted to. She asked me what I was eating etc. and I was beyond surprised when I told her how potatoes bread and pasta shot my BS levels up as she said they wouldn't normally do that!! I found out years ago by experimenting that these types of carbs do that. At the time of my diagnosis it was believed that they didn't and these foods were recommended.

I'm very disheartened as my DN is quite young and its hard to believe she's not aware of these things, thats whats troubling me. I've lost faith in her and feel that if I do have problems that I can't turn to her.

Hi, its bananas i agree, what on earth are they learning about in college? they often dont know the first thing about db, my dsn on my last appointment said to me i dont know why your here, you know more about diabetes than me, i havent been back since, wouldnt you think that would be a reason to quit your job and become a traffic warden if a newly diagnosed person knew more about it than you? maybe she is now a traffic warden and will give me a ticket next week, it would be worth it lol, and never heard of the 5:2 diet? lol has she been living under a rock? im glad its working for you, keep it up :)
thanks for the opportunity to moan at dns, it lowers my bp :)

The short answer is 'if you want something done properly, do it yourself'
Most of us seem to have poor medical support.

.....and I thought it would be unusual that my DN was like this, how wrong was I.. .... didn't realise there would be others in the same boat, we obviously have to paddle to shore on our own.....:wideyed:

....anyway I've had my rant, feel better for doing so....thanks for your replies :D

My husbands theory is that when you've said that all you've had is a bowl of pasta etc, they look at you, see you're fat and think probably had a cream cake or two as well! Sadly, I think he might be on to something! I know that 20% of people are thin but a lot of us aren't when diagnosed. 80% of diabetics are obese but 80% of obese people are not diabetic. Hence the myth that if you're T2 and obese you brought it on yourself . Obviously it's more complex than that and genetics must have a part to play otherwise 20% of diabetics wouldn't be thin and all obese people would have diabetes!
The problem is further compounded when training is given. The NHS healthy plate was taught to trainers and they teach it to the students and so it carries on. For those already on the job, Training costs money so illness will be prioritised and traing will be given for priority conditions. The NHS is hierarchical so DNs would have a very hard time if they challenged a doc, so they take the line of least resistance and don't. Anyway, take care all - am going to have my sausage and egg. I've just had my cup of tea in bed and I'm hungry :D my husband has lost the card and is frantically trying to find it as well as cook the breakfast. I know I shouldn't laugh but it is quie funny! The kids have deserted me and are currently arguing over minecraft. Life as normal, then!

Ha ha, enjoy! Had my mother's day last Sunday as my two are away this weekend ~ nice meal, probably ate everything I shouldn't but its only once in a while ~ roast potatoes, yorkshire pud, my DN would be proud ..... ;)

We are going Spanish today! Tapas! So nothing too bad apart from the vino!

Hi Pollylocks,

I have only beeen diagnosed T2 since February this year and I have already lost the will to live with my DSN, I agree with Andy they would be far better off as traffic wardens than giving diabetics advice. All I can say is thank god for this Forum I am doing really well, loads of fantastic advice and lots of lovely people to offer support when you need it. I am feeling much more positive about the future.

I agree with you so much Mazzer ~ I registered on this forum quite a while ago but haven't really used it until lately ~ DNs seem to be mostly out of touch, we are all individual in how diabetes affects us ~ I am far more interested to hear what posters have to say in here, the support is great :)

I was a bit of a lurbker at first, and didn't feel confident about posting, but seeing how friendly everyone was I decided to join and learn as much as I could about diabletes and maybe add something to the Forum in time to help others:happy:

It is so sad that you get bad advice from your DSNs and Drs. All I can say is that mine have been great and given me encouragement whenever I have seen them. Long may it continue.

You are not alone, Polly. I don't believe a word that come out of my dietician's mouth. If she told me the sun was shining, I would have to look out the window to double check.

I have to live with my diabetes. She doesn't. I trust my meter :)
