So I'm a female n have recently realised that I'm a transgender..... Is it safe to get any type of surgery done? Thank you xx

Hi Bethany

If you go for gender reassignment you are looking at a 2-3 year process of assessment and therapy before you get to surgery. As you are a minor I am not sure you are fully eligible. So probably you want to start with the NHS rather than this diabetic forum. But diabetes is the least of your worries.

All the best xxx

Thanks n I'm only 14 so I have a long while anyway but just wanting to make sure n if I have to get told no I'd rather it now than later xxx

I can't think of any specific medical issues with gender reassignment surgery and diabetes. With diabetes and any surgery there are some extra things to take note of, like minimising the time spent fasting, and so on. Maybe you will be back here in a few years to ask about that Good luck with your journey.

I can't think of any reason why diabetes should stop you having any surgery . The NHS should help and advise you on this one when the time comes, good luck to you JJ

I think you are probably more likely to get a 'no' now rather than later! So don't be disheartened! My son has a frIend in exactly your position aged 16, he has changed his name by deedpoll for gcse certificates and his school permitted him to wear a boys uniform and supported his change, I hope you are getting the same support. I know he is relishing college education where he will be able to be his own person more. Being under 18 makes it harder to make life changing decisions but there are steps you can take at 14. My son and friends have known this boy since a female at primary school and have all readily accepted this. I am sure if you are a fit and healthy diabetic and make your intentions known now in preparation for future surgery then the condition itself shouldn't cause problems. Good luck! I really hope it works out for you! Patience is the game at the moment but if you have good friends and family they will readily see you as the person you want to be now at 14.

Iv got the doctors in Thursday to see about getting the referral to the gender clinic n that if or when I get to the stage of testosterone do u think they would make me wait longer to start on it and could my insulin effect it working??

Sorry Bethany
I can't really help with this one , I have no expertise with this as I'm sure you haven't ether , I would think this is not that uncommon with the amount of diabetics in this world and the clinic should be able to advise as to the best way forward for you and I hope you will take the time to take in the advise with out trying to rush thing , you have the rest of your life to look forward to
Keep well stay safe JJ

Hi Bethany, I wondered how you were doing. I would think you would have to have counselling as it's a huge step to take and it must be the right one for the individual. Wait until you are an adult, you are the same age as my teen and I would say the same to her.
Are you being supported by a family member, someone to talk to for support and guidance ?

Take care RRB

Hi Bethany

Would it help at all to talk to some adult lesbians about this? Just to talk over the issue of you crossing over to be a man vs you remaining a lesbian?

It is such a big decision and at a certain stage no longer reversible so worth doing a lot of talking first.

So I went to the doctors n they have it me in at the gender clinic in Glasgow!! Won't be going until about 3-4 months but still!! N I talked to the doctor n she said that testosterone shouldn't make much of a difference n shouldn't effect my insulins working and I asked about surgery n she just said 1 step at a time so yeah but still great news!!
