Hello,

I am new to the forum but not to diabetes. I was diagnosed T2, 2 years ago thanks to steroid treatment I have to take for another illness. I was 28 yrs old at the time and not overweight so it came as a bit of a shock.

Anyway my recent HBa1C was 7.1 not ideal but the dr's didn't seem to be too concerned, however my husband and I want to start a family at the end of the year.

I saw a pre conception midwife who told me I needed to try to get my a1c down to sub 5.8, she then said but that is virtually impossible for a diabetic. Now reading here I know that it's not impoosible and many people have done it, well done :D

So I am on a mission now to try to bring it down as much as possible. I take 1000mg of metformin but thats it.

I've ordered some cinnamon tablets as they have helped in the past and am looking into the best diets I can follow, so far the South beach diet looks like a good kickstart but seems to be so strict!

I can't exercise much because I have rheumatoid arthritis which leaves me absolutely exhausted most of the time. I am going to start gentle swimming but I think thats as much as i'll be able to manage.

My BMI is 24 although I want to get it down to 22, I am testing regularly at the moment but because I have upped my steroids recently my BG has gone up  I am slowly dropping the level of steroids and hopefully the BG should fall as well.

Any additional tips welcome.

Hi hippychick
Once you come off the steroids then your blood sugars will improve. My GP reckons that it takes at least 6 weeks after stopping before your blood sugars are not affected and I found this to be true when I had to take them for a while.

There is plenty of advice here re diet and you will get plenty of conflicting advice but there is a starter that the Monitors give to newly diagnosed. Might be worth looking at that.

Catherine.,
