... bit nerve wracking doing it for the first time, but I think I got it right. Tested just now after commuting home, before eating and got 5.7. Good/bad? :?
What do I do now? Do I need to test alot, or wait for the GP to tell me to start or... ?

Hya VBee,
thats not bad a reading, between 4 and 7 before meals is good,as for when to test..did u buy the testing stuff yourself or did the dr give it you? have u a limit on testing strips?
let us know :D

I bought it myself from Boots just to have a play with. My Nan has been giving me advice, and she has had to do this for years. She now injects, even though she is Type2. :? Anyway I only have ten strips left and then I have to buy more, my Dr won't tell me to test I just know it. I think it might have been affected by me not being able to draw blood on the lower settings, I had to ramp it up to the fifth notch before it went in deep enough to get blood. And I had just walked home and I was stressed out. I have a needle phobia.
I will use up all the tests I reckon just to get the feel of the thing. I'll do a fasting tomorrow, a before and after lunch, tea, and then bedtime.
I love having new toys, even if they make me owie. Gotta look on the bright side eh?

hehe yep ya gotta look on the bright side luv :D ideally theyre good to find out just what foods do what to your levels so u know to keep away from them :D

oh yeah hun, the techy gadgets make it all worth while!!!!

I have the same unit and I guess probably the same lancet (stabber thingy) ... are you testing on the sides of your fingers (marginally less painful) and on the smallest two or three fingers? Don't bother with thumb (hurts like hell) and index finger - the skin tends to be thicker and then yeah, you need deeper penetration (*trying to squash a rude type joke here*) ...

Also if you wash you hands with warm water prior to stabbage* (*not a word) the warmth will improve blood flow as will the gentle massage. Also helps to keep sample free of possible contaminants (that might affect BG reading) and your fingers free of potential infection :)

Strips are NOT cheap, but can be found on ebay or online chemists shops, or you could try to get some on prescription. Saying *it will help me understand both my condition AND helop me to lose excess weight, therefore saving the NHS huge bundles of cash in the future (at this point try fluttering your lashes)* might help :)

Congrats on proactive stance. Better to prevent diagnosis by acting as if you have diabetes than to await diagnosis and suffer.

Best of luck - and yeah, your reading was a good one ... there are various discussions on here about when to test ... basic times to try:

first thing in morning
immediately before each meal (don't snack whilst making or it affects reading!)
2 hours after meal
last thing before bed

Now my GP says I only need to test twice a week but I advised him that I was new to diabetes and wanted to understand how my body reacted to certain foods ... at the very least, even when I have a greater understanding I will still test first thing in the morning (as I consider this my baseline reading) and after new foods OR if I am poorly. Defo more than twice a week!

All the best, J/x

Good advice there Jem, thanks. The bit about the penetration made me giggle - mucky mind, me? I read some threads on here about the stabbage* (*is now a word) and I used the side of my middle finger near the nail in the end. The first three times nothing came out but a little drop.

1hr 40 minutes after eating a low carb meal came back as 6.4.
Using up my final 5 strips tomorrow. :D

I've got the same tester as you Vbee. Just keep pestering your dr for some. I did and I just have to re order them when needed. I get them 100 at a time. Go on be a nag.

that's a good reading love!

lucky so&so Gilly! - I "only" get 50 at a go - but at least I get them :) - even if my doc today told me I only need to test twice a week *sigh* ...

xxx

Well all my strips are gone. I tested this morning before work (fasting) - 5.5 Not bad!
Commuted to work and nearly had a barney with a bus driver on the last leg of my journey, then got in to work and did one straight away - 7.9
Sat down for a bit and tried to relax and not be stressed out and then tested again - 7.2

hya ,
theyre definately better than they were ,keep up the hard work to get them lower :D

Thanks! You know it's weird, because the last year or two I have been an awfully stressed and angry person (mainly when I commute - the numpties out there! ), and I am starting to think it is pushing me into a cycle. The more stressed I get, the more my BG rises, the crapper I feel, the more stressed I get.... etc...

I should probably add that between all these readings, no food was consumed, no drinks etc.

oh yes that can definately happen, stress raises my bloods quite a bit,son had an accident a few wks ago and i checked my blood at hospital it was in double figures so stress works like that on me too :D

yes thanks hun, just cuts and bruises and a broken collar bone ,if he doesnt bhave i may have throttled him b4 his 18th lol :D
