I think my great Grandaughter has Diabetes

In 1971, when she was nearly 2, my daughter was diagnosed with diabetes, at that time we were told she was one of the youngest ever children diagnosed. Sadly, she passed away aged 24.

For several weeks now my great granddaughter has an insatiable thirst and the obvious result of very frequent wet nappies.

She is the granddaughter of one of my other daughters who does not have diabetes. I have type 1.5 which started when I was 40.

She is 18 months old, very tiny and, in my opinion not thriving as she should. She weighs 19 lbs and her younger brother of 6 months old weighs the same.

I have suggested that she be tested but we are being told she is far too young. On a visit to the ED yesterday because she has a very bad nappy rash (not surprising really) and is very lethagic, we again requested a simple urine sample from her nappy, again we were denied and told she is too young.

This morning we gave her a pin prick test which is 6.2 (in old money!). I believe this to be 48 in new measurements. I think this is indicative of her having Diabetes, any help on where we should go from here please?

With a child so young it is vital she is seen immediately. If she does have diabetes then a child can fall Ill very quickly as high blood sugar can lead to something called Ketoacidosis which can lead to coma. She is not too young to be tested so If it was my child I would take her to A&E immediately. I have heard about so many cases where children who have type 1 are misdiagnosed or dismissed to quickly.

Thank you for such a quick response, we were in a & E yesterday, and they refused to test her, saying she was too young!! Unfortunately, we live on an off shore island and only have access to one hospital.

I'm sorry to hear that. Hopfully it isn't diabetes , but she is NOT too young to be tested. Babies can get type 1 and unfortunately there is a significant increase in the number of very young children being diagnosed. I suggest you go into your GP tomorrow and get her tested. You can also do some home testing which should be done about 1 - 2 hours after she has eaten. A reading of 6 is in non diabetic range. Anything over 7.5 would be questionable.

Hi. It is nonsense to be told a child is too young to be tested or to have diabetes. A reading of 6.2 shouldn't be cause for panic at it is in the normal range but it would be wise to follow-up with the doc and do occasional blood tests 2 hours after a meal.

Hi, maybe I can help, recently my 5 year old grandson was tested for diabetes, his thumb prick was in the 6s, we were told this is non-diabetic reading for children, readings are higher in children and not diagnosed unless they are getting reading over 11. If the child is generally unwell surely other tests should be done to define the problem, my grandson had a full examination and full blood and urine tests to rule out everything, fortunalely he was all clear!
