I want DIET coke

There I was high-fiving myself for going 20-odd days without a high. Then I get served a vodka and coke instead of a vodka diet coke and get a BG of 10.9. Not happy! Next time I'm going to explicitly state that they must make sure it's diet coke as I'm diabetic.
 
Ive also been given full sugar coke instead of Diet coke.

I now always make a point of having Diet coke from a bottle or having sparkling mineral water. Cant go wrong that way.
A while ago it was mentioned about dipping a Clinistix strip into a drink to see if the colour changes due to the sugar content. Clinistix are relatively cheap to buy in pharmacies so worth getting.........
 
Great suggestions! I'll try and get some Clinistix from the pharmacy. I'm that obsessive on a 3 week good BG streak that I would test the drinks I'm served!
 
This happens to me all the time I have sent many drink back I can taste the difference on a sip what's more annoying is why do pubs sell diet coke/ Pepsi but not a diet lemonade very annoying

I agree completely. I love lemonade and would love to have more soft drink options than diet coke. Unfortunately, I'm not discerning enough to notice the difference immediately. I noticed before I finished the drink, but not before it was too late.

Newly daignosed , novomix 30 , 21units in morning and 17 at night , have issues in eating and sleeping pls help me , why my morning BS is always high ???? Late night eating is the problem , so please help me guys

At 10 .9 how did you feel? I don't think I have seen 10 for about a year, I have just been recently diagnosed at a reading of 26 I am currently on Metformin and reading 15.9 on an empty stomach

Just wondering how it feels to be at a normal reading

Also a slow release card cereal biscuit before bed may help with the morning high
 
Although we should probably not be doing it often and using our strips up, your blood machine does actually take a reading for the juice so possibly dont need clinistix.

I can absolutely tell the difference between diet and normal coke. I only drank diet even before diagnosis as I don't like the taste of normal or the horrible feeling in your mouth after!

I can't get my head around diet anything else though. I've tried sprite and 7-up and they just taste foul without the sugar!

I'm off on holiday in 4 weeks to an all inclusive. I know from experience they don't serve diet anything in most of these places. So that'll be a loooooong week of drinking water!
 
Slow release carb biscuits are found in the cereal part of supermarkets, I use Weetabix on the go, ate 2 last night and was lower this morning
 
I've been in single figures for the best part of a month, so 10.9 felt high to me.
 
When I go above 10 I know because I literally fall asleep where I stand. It made for an Interesting meeting the other week that I was meant to be chairing. Ended up having to excuse myself and give myself a shake and a big glass of water to wake myself up!

I remember trying this a few years ago and it doesnt work at all, I cant remember the exact results but I tested sugar drink and a 'zero' type drink and both gave meaningless answers, after trying it and posting my results here someone explained that bg testing machines dont actually measure sugar but something in our blood which explained the useless results I got. I'm sure someone here cleverer than I will be able to fill in the if's & whys on this but trust me it does not tell you the sugar content of drinks like coke.

So please dont waste your test strips trying this or rely on it as a way of knowing if you have a sugar free drink or not.

This question has been discussed so many times in the past here and the only answer that works in practice is to never ever buy fizzy drinks from a dispenser. You can never know if the right drink is connected to the right syrup canister in the pub cellar and even if it is there will always be some sugary residue from the previous drink left in the gun.

Drink coke/fanta/7up etc only from bottles or cans that you can personally read the label on :thumbup:
 


Sids right, there must be 100's of posts on the forum discussing the same thing, in one previous thread we had a member who's family worked in a fast-food chain and they said the syrup was often connected to the wrong lines.

I never ever order drinks from a drinks dispenser because you just don't what your getting, far better asking for a bottle or can clearly labelled diet then pouring it into a glass yourself, failing that good old bottled/tap water or a pint of Guinness if your not driving :wink:

No need for any apology Sam I hadnt meant my comment to sound as though I was bored with the question or anything, just that no other realistic solution has been offered in answer to this type of problem. Unfortunately we cant rely on pub and restaurant managers to look out for us

Your rant was absolutely fine and posts like this are always good to remind people of these pitfalls :thumbup:
 
Hmmm, lots of discussion about traces of syrup etc but no-one has mentioned the effect that alcohol, especially in a spirit like vodka, has on your blood sugars. Yes, your blood sugar will spike but a few hours down the line, your liver will cut off the supply of glucagon to your body potentially causing a hypo. I rarely drink but if I'm on spirits I will drink vodka with normal tonic first then switch to diet. I rarely drink more than 3 but if I did I would have the occasional non-diet one to prevent combining a hypo with a hang over.
 
I'm pretty clued up about alcohol. I'll have diet mixers with spirits and test frequently. If I drop into the 4s I'll have a beer to bring my levels up.

I bet you're gutted when that happens. "Oh no, I'm at 4.3. Guess id better have a beer then"

Such a hardship
