I Want To Help (where I can)

Hi
Would very much like to be able to help the Diabetic community!

Every body in the world from 14 years and up knows the devastation that Cancer can cause and leave behind, Heck till yesterday I did not know that a simple illness such as a chest infection combined with Diabetes can lead up to life threatening complications, and I have lived with someone for 26 years who is Type 1 Diabetic.

But when I say help, I don't mean putting my hand in my pocket, as there is nothing there.

Does anyone have any good suggestions? Please I don't want people making stupid inane replies... I have thought hard about this and with a renewed interest circulating on Facebook for Cancer, I thought why not Diabetes!

Cheers
Lee

That's very kind Lee

I don't know if this would be your thing; but have you thought about creating blogs/Facebook groups, etc... to generate awareness? You could have tons of useful information, link back to this site so that people know they aren't alone; you could have food ideas, recipes, tips and hints....It would be great for someone who has only just been diagnosed and feels a bit lost and it could be good for people that have had diabetes for a while and just want new ideas or info....

Lee,

This is not an inane comment - I support your good intention. As I do not use FB, etc., I cannot contribute but 'all power to your elbow'.

Great idea I am all for creating awareness especially in light of the misconceptions people have. Getting our story out there would be great, the solidarity, the differences in types and treatments yet still motivation and encouragement for ALL diabetics.
Success stories and people who inspire and support others.

That's exactly what I thought of when I wrote my post - there are so many people that just follow what their doctors tell them because they think it's right and the doctors know what they're talking about.

I like the idea of success stories, it would be really good for someone who has just been diagnosed and is feeling a bit down or angry about it to read about others that have turned things around for themselves.

I agree, also I wonder if like someone else suggested that instead of refering to T1 and T2 we simply say insulin dependant or non insulin dependant. I know there are differences in treatment but that may clarify a little.

We definately need to raise/ generate awareness in a positive manner to try to deflect from the negitivity. :D

We have so many strong experienced and positive role models in our forum community and with the recipie ideas and suggetions.

Facebook, twitter, my space, local papers in areas like the leader the freepaper ppl get on fridays local selling places look at friday-ad.co.uk or gumtree places like these will generate thru to google advertising yhen bounce.it back to this forum there is not enough info and help on diabetes and ppl believe its not a big thing but unless u have diabetes they will never understand the obstacles we have to face each and every time we eat are ill or want to start a family its a 247 disease which only u can control the whole world is flooded in cancer charities and donations but unfortunately hard truth is cancer either kills u or u survive it and u r treated for it diabetes unless u look after it yes it will kill u i lost 10 years of my life not knowing anything about diabetes im now 24 it took one bout of being ill and thats when i decided i needed help 3 years down the line with proper care from a diff.hospital and my own hope im managing it much better i agree more help is needed especially for first time diabetics!!

I was wondering if you would like me to create buttons, badges and banners to go on peoples websites? They could be downloaded and added to peoples Facebook profiles; banners can be inserted on websites (set as a clickable image that could link back here or wherever). They can also be put on peoples blogs, used as forum signatures - anything really.

Let me know if you'd be able to use something like that and I'll get some ideas together!
