Hi all
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes just over a month ago. Now this came as a shock as I am 6ft and weigh only 11 stone. So I don't really fit the typical profile. However my diet was really very BAD, cakes, biscuits, loads of sugar in loads of tea, huge amounts of cream, chocolates, you get the picture
But after seeing the doctor that all stopped cold turkey style, which really came from fright of this illness. The good news is that my BG levels are very well controlled currently average of 7.5mmol, I test myself 3-4 times a day and really watch what I eat. My blood pressure for the first time in my life is now in the normal range rather than pre-hypertension, I test that every day

My current worry is that I am still losing weight as I am down to 71kg just under 11stone. Because my diet is very good I have this side effect and would like to put some weight back on. Obviously I cant go back to cakes & chips but did think of using weight gain drinks from the health shop that body builders use. Would this be a good or bad idea, or is there anything else I could eat safely.

I look forward to ant suggestions.
Many kind thanks

Simon.

Hi
I was in a similar position and have manage to gain some weight. I am trying to keep my carbs down which has helped a lot with my blood sugars but makes weight gain difficult. It seems to me you do have to attack the problem with the same dedication as trying to lose weight The supplement i use is isopure zero carb vanilla from amazon. For snacks nuts are good and quorn do a type of scotch egg and mini sausage.

Hi Phillip

Thanks for the great advice I will check out Amazon. I do eat a fair bit of nuts (monkey ones that is). I don't drink either so beer is out :) Your right about the carbs, I miss them dearly but health first. Quorn will be investigated also.

Kind regards

Simon.

Hi,
I'm not an expert and am T1 so not sure I should be posting here but I will anyway. Would maybe cheese be a nice option? You can cut a cross in a round of camembert put it back in the wooden pot and cook in the oven for around 20 mins, comes out like a yummy cheese sauce and dip in with raw veg (cauliflower particularly yummy). Or cover some spinach with grated chedder and salt n pepper(maybe shove a poached egg under the cheese). Or some nice oily fish sardines, makeral etc. If you have a blender bung in some smoked makeral with some cream cheese, horseradish, lemon juice and black pepper - makes a sort of pate, I have mine with thin sesame crackers (3.5g carbs per slice), I think is YUM!

Hope this helps, I love food and cooking and I'm sure if I'm completely wrong on this someone will come back and put me right.

Happy (healthy) eating

Esther

Thank you very much for the kind advice, unfortunately I'm allergic to fish but love cheese to bits, so more cheese with veg sounds like a great idea. Munch in front of the telly, fine idea :D
As for adding cream well that's another fab idea. I will watch my BG levels just to see how much to add as I can go a little be daft with the old luxury foods that I miss.
I'll make a start on those tomorrow and monitor my weight. It would be nice just to have the old face look a bit fuller like before, I know I'm technically more healthy than I have ever been before but the face don't show it much :o

Thanks for all you very kind advice

Here's to eating...well :D
