Ideas for portable LC snacks (unrefridgerated)

Hi All,

We went shopping today and came back with pork scratchings, 70% cocoa choc and peanut 9bars. They make great, portable snacks. So we use them as cupboard staples. I've got them in my desk drawer at work, the larder, and always carry one in my handbag - you never know when nibbles are needed.

But a little more variety would be wonderful.

Have any of you got any suggestions?
Sorry to sound picky, but unless they tick the list below, they wouldn't really fit the bill... tall order, I know!

  • Portable
  • Reasonable shelf life
  • Hygienically sealed
  • No refrigeration needed
  • No washing up needed

Diagnosed T2 in sept 2013, BS levels 20+. BMI 22, age 59. Then diagnosed T1 / LADA in December. On a LcHf diet taking no insulin or medication, and striving to keep my BS readings to dr Bernstein's recommended 4.6 pre breakfast and 5.6 2hr after eating in order to keep as many insulin making pancreas beta cells as possible for as long as I can.

Those ready made jellies don't require refrigeration, but you would need to scoop it out the pot with your paw to get round the "no washing up" rule.
 
Babybel cheese. - Yes, they probably should be in the fridge, but I take them on tour with me and they survive quite happily in my bag and suitcase for weeks on end.

Doesn't pepperami go a bit... er... Greasy? That's why I've never tried it. May give it a go, and see.

I love nuts, and I do eat them in small quantities, but a proper snack-to-prevent-low- BG would probably give me mouth ulcers...

And yes! Baby bel! Used to eat these all the time. Not sure how that ever stopped. Nice reminder.

I do love cocktail sausages, but I think I'd be happier if they lived in a fridge, beforehand.

Oh, and I thought of one myself - jerky, so long as not coated on sweet stuff.

When you had cheese and biscuits in catering outlets you used to get a mini pat of butter and a mini cellophane wrapped piece of cheese, usually cheddar.

Not sure if you can get these in the shops, but slices or cubes of cheese in cling film should do O.K.

I cook sausages wrapped in bacon then store them in the fridge for use as protein snacks but they can be undignified to eat whole when you are out in company
Cocktail sausages (or chipolata) are much smaller and easier to snack on.

Of course, it all depends on how long they need to last before eating, and how warm they will get.

Thanks for posting this up, Brunneria It's useful for me at the moment as I'm trying to get off the starvation/**** food roundabout I'm locked in to .

I'm about to go shopping for the first time in two weeks, so will be looking for portables to stock up with Baby Bel ! I'd forgotten about those !
LOL @Avocado Sevenfold re. the jelly and scooping it up with the paws, I've been tempted ! I've been necking the jelly this afternoon, it's been bliss !

I suppose - in a moment of horrific jelly deprivation - I could Blue Peter the silver foil jelly lid into a cunningly devised spoon shape...

But wot about the cream part?

Can't have jelly without cream!!!

Oh, they are ACE.

9bars come in about 5 flavours, and are basically seeds and nuts smooshed together with a tiny amount of flapjack goo. Some of them have a thin layer of carob pretending to be chocolate on the top.

The peanut 9bar doesn't have carob, but does have peanuts. Yay!
It has about 16g of carbs and doesn't spike my BG at all.

The cheapest we've found them is Asda, so we make a special Asda 9bar pilgrimage every couple of weeks.
Mr B likes them too, which is a pity, because he seems to eat a lot of them. Hence today's emergency pilgrimage!

Aldi do little blocks of cheese wrapped separately and their cheesestrings are cheaper as well when tesco doesn't have offers on.

I'll have the same problem in September of what to eat on the plane.
 
Tesco do small meatballs that are really nice and don't bother your BSLs. Mmmm!
 
Pickled onions!




(They are preserved in vinegar so don't have to also be refrigerated despite what it says on the label, IMO grrr!)
 
Discovered fridgeraiders today think they were 3.4 carbs they went down a treat anyway after a busy morning at work lol
