If I eat something bad - how long before my meter shows it?

Hi

Last night I was naughty and after a steak, salad and jacket potato I had a gluten free cup cake (it wasn't worth it - my mind had built it up to be something it could never be ). My BG level went up to 8.6 which I expected but when I got up this morning I was showing 10.2. I thought that after its peak and with the dawn phenonomen it might have stayed around the 8 mark. My BG seems to be rising for no apparent reason these days. Is the morning reading still showing residual cupcake or are things getting worse. I'm a T2 diagnosed 1/6/13 and my morning readings have always been higher than bedtime but only up to around 7.5 until the last week or so?

hi, fat can slow down carbs and therefore take longer to show the effects on your monitor basically stretching out the spike into a lower but longer one, also complex carbs take longer to digest over simple carbs, if you fancy a sneaky cupcake try to have it right on top of a lower carb meal low Gi will even it out ie. if you eat high GI with low GI it all becomes medium GI so afters are best eaten straight after the meal, but the cupcake was well gone by then it wouldnt have been that, bg is a strange animal and does what it wants with no rhymn or reason, i wouldnt worry about the odd strange reading try to take an average view or you will drive yourself nuts, the meters also arent perfectly accurate, the other day i was on my way to buy lunch so i tested and was 6.9 which is high for me before food, because it was high i tested again within 5 minutes and i was 5.5 im sure the 6.9 must have been a dirty finger or my meter was premenstral

im not medical this is all just my opinion

best of luck

i think on average your meter should peak at about an hour although 10 minutes is enough to register the food, we apparently start to digest food as soon as its in our mouths before we even swallow, the 2 hour test is because at 2 hours your insulin has kicked in and should have dealt with it therefore the 2 hours after food is a signal of how your coping with the spike not the spike itself

sorry i have reading memory issues and re read your post after replying hence the 2 posts

Whilst the cupcake did not do you any favours, are you able to eat baked potatoes without a spike usually. Not many Type 2's can do this.

Thanks to you both. Looks like even gluten free goodies will have to go on the discarded pile though to be honest its rare to find anything gluten free that comes close to the real thing!

All my readings have increased by about 2-4 mmol in the last 2 weeks. At first put it down to being on holiday but I think I will have to rethink the diet and go back to strict low carb - and test after potatoes - they weren't spiking me previously but perhaps they are now!

It would be nice if the manufacturers could lace all carbs with a foul tasting ingredient so I wasn't tempted....might impact their profits though .

Will try to avoid carbs today and see what it looks like tomorrow. Have to book in for my 3 month hba1c shortly and would rather have had a period of good readings than bad as I'm still on diet only.

Thanks again

Cath

The good old spud can spike your blood.
The only way I can eat them is roasted in beef dripping (yummy) and then only in moderation ...and before anyone shouts about the fat etc, my last tests were 6.1 HbA1c and 3.4 total cholesterol.

Well as I love roast potatoes that's a great option.
