Just a thought but I've been struggling with a stomach bug for the last few days and really haven't been up to eating at all and I settled on ice-cream as, at least, I could keep it down without feeling too awful. Usually I just try to struggle on with my same eating regime amending insulin levels as I go, what about anyone else? I don't get sick often but I've been T1 for 5 years and I get sick for a few days a year now every year and I never got sick (I mean absolutely never, well maybe a day or two in the previous decade), how does this compare.

You might be a little more vulnerable to bugs.
Try natural yogurt instead of ice cream, less sugar and it has microflora support characteristics.

Thanks for the reply; I don't think I explained myself too well, I wasn't looking for advice on my own illness but rather for others to inform upon how they have coped with being diabetic and sick. I appreciate that the immune system is somewhat compromised but has this meant more illness, worse or longer illness. Are the fitter amongst us more or less susceptible. Do people just plow on eating and taking insulin (as I try to do) or do they suffer through illness in other ways?

Sorry, I misundestood you.
I'm T2 an don't use insulin and apart from the odd cold, haven't been ill in 5 years, so can't answer. I work very hard a keeping fit.

Hi
Not been sick as such ( to the point of raised bg) but know that managing a bad hangover is murder. Rather than avoiding hypers that come with illness, trying to manage hypos when you can barely get out of your bed or eat I just tend to opt for ice cream too

In general terms I was never ill either. Now i find I get lots of small things like cold sores, boils in my ear, and also had 4 horrendous unprecedented flare ups of eczema since January.
Was only diagnosed in Sept, have an A1c of 5.1 and try not to eat a high spike diet - but still :?

Have to say I haven't been ill since I was diagnosed but have read a bit about it on here and how it can affect your levels. Will wait and see what happens when I do get some bug or other...sorry that's not what you are looking for either but have to say I feel quite well since I was diagnosed. Must be the diet and exercise.

Hi,

Only diagnosed type 1 in July last year but haven't been ill until now. I say ill, but it's just a heavy cold and sore throat. I dreaded my first sick day as a diabetic and worried about getting high bg levels as a result of illness, but strangley enough my levels have stayed the same as usual. Did notice a couple of days of slightly higher levels before the symptoms kicked in, but nothing I had to ajust insulin for. I feel really rubbish but the bg levels are staying the same (thank goodness). Haven't gone off grub either!!!!

Caitycakes x

Hope that is the same for me then. No sooner had I typed that than the sneezing started!! Feel a bit rough today. Hope it's not my hayfever come early

If feeling sick, I stick to light foods a piece of toast or a cracker, but in the main I’ve found that when I’m unwell BG normally raise, so keeping them down is more problematic than worrying about a hypos

I did several years ago suffer the Norvak virus, which left me vomiting for 14 hours and not even being able to keep any fluids down and several weeks to recover from it fully.

I used the sick day rule as I was on basal/bolus regime, so inject my normal background insulin, injected insulin following these rules, checked my BG every hour… Sipped water boiled water I could manage… When I was over the worst, I used boiled water didn’t eat anything for 30 hours or so… But when I did it was a bowl of vegetable soup…
