I've taken Metformin and then Metformin SR for approximately 3years, my BS has been up and down, but my two biggest problems have been no weight loss and intermittent upset stomachs, while doing low carb and walking I haven't lost an ounce it's been so disheartening, I just stay the same weight..... last Friday I stopped taking the Metformin SR and on Monday I was prescribed Forxiga Dapagliflozin one 10mg tablet a day, I started taking them on Tuesday but I was disappointed this morning my fasting blood test was 10.4 after 2 boiled eggs for breakfast it was 9.2 but hoping the tablet will kick in and come down more, but the most amazing thing in the 6 days that I've stopped taking Metformin I've lost 4lbs, I can't believe it and I'm thrilled to bits

Well done on the weight loss. I don;t take any medication so can't comment on the effects but lets hope things are taking a turn for the better for you :)

Thank you, although I hate having this God awful disease, I'm looking forward to making some changes

I can honestly say that I am healthier now than I was 3 months ago when diagnosed! Have your fasting blood tests come down at all yet?

Given that Forxiga puts sugar down the drain, and hence removes the sugar from your body, it can often result in some weight loss. But I expect a lot of the 4lbs will be water loss, therefore are you drinking enough water as dehydration is an issue with Forxiga.

Well done you as a type one for 36 years until my double transplant nearly three years ago. After my transplant i was given gabapentin for pain relief but all it did was put from 85kg to 107 kg , so i came off the tablets and i am now just under 90 kg. so it just goes to show how different medication can alter how heavy you are.

Metformin is supposed to help weight loss! Your experience shows this advice is rubbish. Well done losing 4 lbs. great achievement.

I'm happy if the 4lb was water loss, as it hasn't happened in the last couple of years I've lost nothing.....I'm definitely thirstier and yes I'm drinking more water and peeing more, but anything is better than the side effects of Metformin

I'd have insisted I come off the Metformin much sooner if I had thought it was affecting my weight, funnily enough a previous DN suggested the Forxiga, she said it was new so we'd wait to my next appointment and see about changing me over to it, but she left the surgery and the next DN wasn't interested, well done on your weight loss you must be much happier

Absolutely....probably like many things it affects people in different ways

Metformin is well proven to help weight loss in most people, there is no question about it, Metformin is clearly the best first-line drug for a doctor to try with anyone who has health issues due to insulin resistance. But all of our bodies are different, and doctors need to be more willing to spend time listening to people and to be willing to change the treatment when it does not work for the given person.

Forxiga and other SGLT2 inhibitors are starting to look like they will replace sulphonylureas (Gliclazide for example) and become the next drug to try. SGLT2 inhibitors are starting to look like they reduce the risk of strokes and heart attaches (just line Metformin does), unlike sulphonylureas that seem to increase these risks. But SGLT2 inhibitors do have side effects, mostly related to the way they work, by increasing sugar in the urine. However SGLT2 inhibitors are the only drug that removes the sugar from the body, all the others just push it into different bits of the body.

SGLT2 inhibitors (on their own) also don't create a risk of Hypos hence they allow people to try intermittent fasting, low carb etc without that fear.
