I'm back from my first meeting with the Diabetic Nurse

Well done, here's hoping your weight and bp come down before your next appointment is due

Just tested 2 hours after my dinner and it came out at 5.6

Is that good? Do you guys think with a 3.7 this morning and a 5.6 this evening I am not actually diabetic or is it just eating right?

Did you test before eating Marie? 5.6 could be a normal result or one for a well controlled diabetic.

Also what did you have for your meal, food and drink? It is possible you missed the peak as this often occurs at 1 hour after. (Most of mine do)

Sounds like you could be only marginally diabetic. Your next HBa1C will help to determine that. A blood sugar level of 3.7 is too low and, for example, you shouldn't drive at that level. I would not go that long after a 7pm meal; have some breakfast.

I thought that only applies to insulin users or insulin promoting medication? There are unmedicated Type 2's on this forum who have readings in the high 3's without side effects.

I had home made bolognese. No pasta. Just lean mince, a tin chopped tomatoes, peppers, chilli, spices and garlic. Small portion that filled half a bowl (froze the rest in portions) No pasta just the bolognese. I've only been drinking pints of water. I tested 2 hours after on the dot like the nurse told me to. Other than that I had a muller light for breakfast and one babybell for lunch.

It's making me wonder if I am or not. I've been very strict since I found out so now I'm tempted to just eat some normal stuff just to see. Because now I've found out today about how bad my liver is could my symptoms have been down to that not diabetes?Reading online it also causer the neuropathy. Could the result the first time just have been a complete one off? I feel like I am losing my willpower with my diet now because I don't think I am truly diabetic. I could be wrong, maybe the diet has really controlled it? Should I try one day where I eat without checking carbs or sugars. Eat something sweet and see what happens?

I only have enough test strips to do the two tests each day she wants me to record. First thing in the morning and 2 hours after my dinner. Once that other kit comes that I bought on amazon I can go crazy testing lol.

When I did the BG test in the morning with the nurse using the monitor she gave me as I said it was 3.7. They then took more bloods to test it that way. Why do they do this if they've just seen it on that monitor? Does it make much difference in the result having it tested properly?

Should I test after an hour tomorrow instead of 2 then do you think?

Your diet is hard core, I couldn't eat that little
Have you seen the lchf diet or the Atkins induction, both are very good for weight reduction and bg

Thanks. Had a rough night. Tingling pins and needles a little in my left foot and leg all night and still now. Tossing and turning and talking nonsense in my sleep. I feel quite dizzy this morning. Tested before breakfast and I'm 4.6 I did allow myself a packet of Quavers crisps at about 9 last night whilst watching a film.

I dd feel very hungry yesterday evening so had a packet of Quavers. I think maybe I'm not having enough calories.

I wouldn't have thought that taking insulin or not should make any difference? Although taking insulin can make blood sugar very low if overdone, the end effect of low blood sugar is the same i.e. it can affect brain glucose. We all vary and my hypo threshold varies between low 4s and mid 3s. Some posters on the forum have talked of having hypos whilst not on any meds. I think it would be unwise to drive with sugars that low unless you are confident you aren't near a hypo.

If that is your normal daily intake of food then personally I don't think you are eating enough. One Muller light for breakfast and one BabyBel for lunch is not a meal they are just a snacks It is important to try and have 3 meals a day. I am not a big eater ot overweight but I could not survive on just that amount of food a day.

My bloods run pretty tightly. I often have readings in the 3s and feel and function perfectly well. Under 3.4 and I can feel pretty empty, so I tend to act then. The action will depend on how close I am to a mealtime. And actually, I believe my liver is pretty good at picking me up again.

I have a hypothesis to test next month, when I will have easy access to a bunch of test strips, and time on my own to indulge a test-fest, to try to understand exactly when, and how my liver kicks in. Actually, I would love a CGM for a month, but can't work out how I might go about that at a reasonable cost.

We're all different in our thresholds, and I feel I will find my bloods score lowest when I am eating enough calories to maintain my weight, and some carbs in that mix. If I eat too little, my levels tend to record a little higher, due to liver dump, I am currently assuming. It's all a bit of a puzzle really.

@Marieukxx - your diet looks pretty much at starvation levels to me, so lower numbers may be encouraging, in that your body can run low, BUT, I don't think it is sustainable, and you need to find a max of food and blood scores where you feel well, and are within acceptable scores.

When I was diagnosed I had a high fasting score, and HbA1c, which dropped off almost immediately (albeit in identifiable steps down). I had the same circular arguments with myself as you are having now. I didn't find this place as quickly as you did, so I had a couple of weeks of feeling my way through the morass of information and misinformation before I really got to grips with my "next steps", and testing. During that time, I did see diabetic range readings, so I have the hard and fast evidence self-proving my diagnosis.

If you really, really can't get away from that questioning, it could be worthwhile eating your previously normal diet (including bread, breakfast cereals, potatoes, whatever) for a few days and see how the numbers go then. It's not something I would generally advocate, but the sooner we can accept the diagnosis the better, and more healthily we will embrace the necessary changes for the longer term.

Thank you, I'm going to eat a more substantial lunch from now on. I've got a book of soup recipies and I*'m going to make some up for lunches plus the nurse said I could have one slice of wholemeal bread so some days I'll have scrambled egg on toast too. I feel very clamy and sweaty today. Also I am very weak in my arms and legs still. I have a job getting out of the bath they are so weak. I don't know if that's diabetes or my bad liver. I've just bought online a treadmill to get myself fit which is coming in 2 weeks. I'll definitely need to eat more if I am working out as well.
