I'm unstable

May Mic

Well-Known Member
We went to get medical travel insurance this afternoon for an upcoming trip. Once I declared I was diabetic (Type 2) all the fun started.

I'm considered unstable because I was only diagnosed in January. It needs to be a year. Since the Dr. recommended going on metformin and I begged for another 3 months - more unstable status, I cannot be covered for it. Let's say I go a year, no drugs, then I'm stable... go on drugs, change dose or medication, boom, back to unstable.

I would have thought they'd be happy with one who is not on meds..

But I don't know what conditions I'd be likely to get as a result of this on a short term basis. I.E. 15 day out of country coverage. Coverage for everything else still applies.

My bank account took quite the hit.

@May Mic welcome to the complex world of travel insurance. Have you tried one of the insurance companies that specialise in pre existing medical problems? My OH has a number of conditions and, whilst it is expensive, we do get cover. For my part I’ve never been asked how long I’ve had T2 or whether or not I take meds for it.

Unless one is on medication that may cause major hypos, I can't immediately think of anything that whay happen in 15 days. Most complications of t2 are very long term eg neuropathy, kidney problems, eyesight problems etc so unless you are already suffering or starting to suffer these I can't see a problem.
Of course there's always the dreaed heart attack which us quoted as as t2 but by a certain age aren't we all in that risk category any way?.

Our insurance comes with our bank account and when I phoned and told them i just said in remission diet controlled only and they were fine with it. (Nationwide)
