Hi,

I've been a diabetic for over 20 years now and when the autumn season starts I seem to be catching colds and flu very easily. Is there anything, apart from flu jab, that you can recommend from your own experience that will boost immune system? Any particular vitamins?

Thank you!

Some will scoff - but after I cut out the carbs, I haven't had so much as a *sniff* during the Autumn/Winter months.

I used to get a throat infection every winter without fail - I haven't suffered with that for many years now (touch wood!).

In the colder months I start making home made soup and I take 2 Berocca's a week, of coure it may all be a coincedence but I've found myself not getting so much colds etc as before, I do have 3 young kids though so always pick something up no matter what!

Agreed with Patch, since I am low carbing and eating tons of vegetables and berries I havent had the remotest sign of a cold.
Every year I freeze elderberries, they are meant to be particularly good in boosting the immune system, I think thats why this Sambucol stuff is so popular (google it), its a elderberry extract.
If you can get hold of elderberries next autumn, they grow just about everywhere, do yourself a favour, freeze them, then you can cook them and serve with ice cream or cream for dessert YUM, but any berries are good, you can buy frozen berries quite cheap from most supermarkets.

And I make lots of soups, using home made chicken stock, chicken soup is supposed to make you feel better when you are poorly with cold and flu, but I think its therapeutic any time.

I will post a few delicious soup recipes in the low carb recipes forum as soon as the school holidays are over.

Hope everyone stays healthy x

All brill advice from the above posters :D I could not agree more with the Berrie's, the extra Vitamin C is great for boosting your immunity. Keeping it as natural as possible with good whole foods of the fruit and veg variety, is to me, the best way forward for keeping your immunity up there.

There are a few supplements I take for my immunity and general well being and Diabetes, I don't know your stance on these but I have found a big improvement in not getting the little kiddy (which are the killers  )
bug's that my kids bring home. My husband gets em ,but whether it is a placebo I don't ever pick them up, I don't know, but I take Zinc, magnesium and the old fish oils.

There has also been a lot written about Vitamin D3 warding off complications in Diabetes and in some Northern hemisphere countries it is prescribed as standard...same in the US with a lot of Endo's. This also helps with immunity in the short winter days. In fact some Dr's think it is the fall in vitamin D levels that cause our winter colds ,flu ect....anyway I take that as well ,so it may be one worth considering.

Plenty of good fresh fruit and veg though...won't do you far wrong
