Type 2 In need of help.

I've joined this site to hopefully get some help as I'm worried about my mother in law who has type 2 diabetes. Her insulin doses are 86 in the morning the same at lunch time and 80 at tea time. Apparently she is now insulin resistant hence the high doses. Her blood sugars were in the mid 20s or higher for months and are now swing between 15 and 20 ish. What are the long term effects? She is now a aged 82, very overweight and unable to walk more than a couple of steps.

Unfortunately, it sounds like she has SEVERE insulin resistance.

Those levels are incredibly hard on your body and especially for someone your mother's age. It's hard to say how long before she will begin to see the effects, but you need to help her watch for infections, circulatory issues, nerve pain, and especially help her inspect her feet/hands.

I don't want to scare you which is why I'm not listing the specific long-term effects, but it sounds like your mother is in serious need of help and quickly.

Best of luck.

Don't know her diet do you? A fine balance between her age, her mobility and her desire to lower those numbers. That is a tough call given she's 82. Any other details ? Drugs she might be on ?

She's in a nursing home and they have guidance from the diabetic clinic at the hospital now. There are already signs of neuropathy in her hands and feet and gets regular bladder infections. She's now getting pain in the side of her head. We had a scare 3 months ago where she almost went into kidney failure. Bit of a minefield

Hi shell. A difficult one, but unfortunately not uncommon when it comes to care in certain nursing homes. I think a lot depends on why she is in the home and if she has any other conditions such as dementia of any type that would make her general care more difficult to manage. With the list you have given, and especially as she is very overweight, I would suspect that the care being given by the home is erratic. After all, she wouldn't be very obese unless she was getting a lot of unsuitable food, and I suspect a lot of carbohydrate rich foodstuffs, which will in turn push her levels up higher. I'm not sure how involved you are in her care, if you are, would it be possible to ask the home to arrange a meeting or call so you can discuss what has been advised? failing that, maybe her gp - they all need to be registered with a doctor.
If you aren't involved, then I'm assuming a social worker might be, you could raise your concerns with them. I wouldn't leave matters like this because it really does sound as if her care isn't adequate in some way, and needs to be reviewed as a matter of urgency.

Failing all this, you could try contacting the Care and Quality Commission (CQC) who inspect all homes, hospitals etc, and ask their advice.

Hope it works out ok.
