This article explains why an insulin pump is necessary for some Type 1's.
Although NICE has agreed that up to 20% of people with Type 1 would use pumps, most PCT's are only funding between 5 - 10 extra pumps each year. The barrier is largely cost.
Simon O'Neill, DUK, says there is evidence that an estimated saving of £23,532 over 2yrs. can be derived from pump use. as a patient will have fewer hypos and hospital visits.
