Inflamed Pancreas

Am hoping is ok to post in this part of the forum as I have type two diabetes. Have spent a while trying to relax about things and be more careful in what i eat as my sugars have been uncontrolled with metformin. . I mentioned elsewhere that i was going to have an ultrasound as my GP suspected gallstones as i had pain in my front going through to my back etc, had dark wee and one incident of light coloured poo that hasn't happened since. I had blood tests done a couple of days ago that i thought were for sugar levels as Metformin gives me chronic toilet problems. Got a call the next day saying they found i have an inflamed pancreas and are putting me in for a ct scan. I also have an ultra scan on Sunday that was previously booked. I'm now terrified and am hoping someone here has experience with an inflamed pancreas showing up in bloods. My anxiety is telling me it is something terrible that i can't even say. I'm hoping gall stones can cause the pancreas to inflame. Very frightened so would appreciate any info if anyone has any experience with this. Thank you x

Hi @svalentine60 I have literally just come back from Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge, having had my fourth blood test since 13th August. I had Type 1 from 1959 till Addenbrooke's gave me a kidney/pancreas transplant on 13th-14th August 2013. The blood test on 13/08/18 showed an unacceptable level of lipase and amylase, both from the pancreas. Yet I show no symptoms to explain this. If today's blood test shows an improvement since the last, which showed a slight improvement, then I shall not be going for the CT scan booked this coming Monday. Usually they would expect pancreatitis, or rejection, but pancreatitis which is very painful and just means pancreatic swelling, is unlikely as I have no pain. Having said this, my wife had pancreatitis when she was 4 and only had antibiotics. I am not in a position to judge, but I would like to try and calm your fears, since I have been informed that this may simply be a blip. Let's hope for the best.

As far as I am aware, gall stones CAN cause inflammation of the pancreas. A friend of mine had nasty pancreatitis, was in ITU for a while but was absolutely fine after having her gall stones removed once her pancreas had settled down. So, yes, try not to worry unduly as it could be just down to gall stones - which are treatable Wishing you the all the best

Had my ultrasound scan this morning. still have to have a ct scan. I told her my fears and she took ages to do the scan. Told her i'd been very anxious thinking it was pancreatic cancer and she said 'we wouldn't be allowed to tell you if we saw cancer'. So that got me concerned right away. Afterwards she was really lovely and said 'Your scan looks exactly the same as it did when you had the last one and you still have a fatty liver. I can't see anything wrong with your pancreas or gallbladder. It all looks normal. Obviously a ct scan can show more " I didn't even remember having a previous scan so must have been years ago. I know they're not allowed to tell you anything and it has to be sent to someone to look at but I think she found a way around it by saying it all looked normal to her. She said if she saw anything she would simply say i would have to wait for results and wouldn't say anything about the scan to me at all.

So i'm kinda left in limbo. No gallstones seen on the ultra scan. Yet I have an inflamed pancreas. Don't know whether to be concerned or happy about todays result. My anxiety has spiralled out of control recently with all this.
