Hi

I have a 6 year old son who has had type 1 diabetes for over a year. i keep finding that his blood sugars keep going up into its teens as soon as he has a flu. At present he is on his honeymoon period. He was feeling unwell during the weekend but is better today but sugar was still high. Ketones were checked and were fine. My question is, "is it normal for his sugar levels to increase after he has the flu and his body stops producing the small amounts of insulin it is still producing ?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

In times of illness and stress it's quite normal for bg levels to go high and stay there until matters improve, you should have a word with your boys DSN and ask them to explain the Sick Day Rules to you.

I was diagnosed when I was 10. It's very normal for BGs to go out of control during illness, even small illnesses. A few weeks ago I had an infection on my finger - nothing serious - and my BGs were about 3x higher than they normally would be.

Definitely mention this to your son's diabetes team next time you see them. As noblehead says, there are special adjustments we can make to our medication during illness that help keep them down.

It is to do with the liver detecting illness and pumping out some of it's glucose reserves to help. You often need to inject more when you are ill but check with your DSN to get a specific decision on what to do.
