Informative interview about COVID-19 vaccine

Most of them got massive up front funding from one or more governments in order to develop the vaccines, so I think the non-profit announcements are a little misleading. Under usual circumstances they recoup their research and development costs by selling the final product. This time, they are being paid first and dispensing the product to fulfil huge pre-paid orders.

This is how rich western countries like UK, US and Canada have bought up to 3 x the number of vaccines they need to vaccinate their entire population, spread across multiple different vaccine producers (to cover their bets). This was way back in the spring last year when they were all desperately speculating that most of the vaccines would be duds.

I just desperately hope that the over-orders will be given to countries that didn't/couldn't place advance orders, and who are now hanging on at the back of the queue, hoping for their late orders of the vaccine will arrive sometime late 2021 or throughout 2022.
Several countries have already committed to pass their excess vaccines on.

I gather governments did indeed stump up advance funds - to finance the expensive trials. Yes, companies will recoup R&D costs by selling the final product, but I gather it will be at cost price - hence the non-profit claim. Do you have more precise information which refutes this? Would be informative...

I am doubting, not refuting, the claim. No one has the info of the company accounts to make a clear cut statement yet - and won't have for months or years. No point in refuting anything at this point, is there?

However, I am doubting that it is as simple as the soundbites make it sound. And you can see those soundbites all over the media. Oxford AstraZenica announced their 'not for profit' intention months ago, long before they reached the third stage of their vaccine trial. It is certainly easy to publicise ‘not for profit’ when a huge cheque was received before the vaccines were made.

You yourself are agreeing with me that the advance payments are being used for R&D before rollout, instead of recouping the cost from sales, and I am sure that the employee Xmas bonuses will all be paid out as usual. And I am equally sure all the accounts will be perfectly above board. Would be fascinating to read the contracts between the pharm companies and the various governments though, wouldn't it?

ed. For clarity.

I see better what you mean - thank you.
I was assuming that there are still R&D costs beyond the expense of trials - lab work etc - so the companies still have outlay to recoup from sales. Also, there is huge potential to make profit beyond the current round of COVID-19 vaccines...
