injected too much insulin

After doing so well carb counting and calculating insulin I read the uncooked carbs for pasta per 100 g instead of cooked. It didnt occur to me until after the first hypo I had given myself triple the dose I should have. I had to constantly eat carbs between hypos. Silly me! I am okay now but it was scary

Re: injected toouch insulin

Hope you are OK!! I was told pasta & rice double in size. So 50g uncooked pasta - would be roughly 100g cooked weight. So depending on wether you weigh cooked or uncooked portions. As I cook for the family, I weigh out a cooked portion for my daughter as its easier. Most labels may have standard 100g dry weight, so for a 50g cooked portion I'd halve the carb content of that. You won't make that mistake again. Good that you realised why though.

Hello. I did wonder why I hypo'd as I had weighed my food. Uncooked in the booklet the hospital gave me was 76 carbs per 100g and cooked is 22. I am only on one unit to ten carbs and I had nine units instead of three. I will be so careful in future. I was rushing.
Thank you for responding . I mention it as a warning to all newbies to check and check again. I think I was very lucky x

Please try and get yourself a copy of Chris Cheyette and Yello Balolia's book - Carbs & Cals. It is a book which contains photos of most foods with their Carb values. This makes it very easy to see the amounts of food and carb values at a glance. It is also available as an app on smart phones.

I find this invaluable for calculating carbs and will make it very difficult for you to miscalculae your carbs.

I've only been diagnosed as type 1 for 3 weeks,I'm only 16 and I don't really understand all of this. What's it like having a hypo? And how common are they?

Hypo's vary from person to person, I tend to get quite shaky, dizzy and then i know to check my blood sugars. Ask your specialist nurse/doctor to put you on a DAFNE/ carbohydrate counting course once your feeling up to it. It basically teaches you how to figure out how much carbohydrates are in a meal and then you can work out exactly how much insulin you need to take for that particular meal. You do have to work out your insulin to carbohydrate ratio though - i recommend you discuss this with your specialist, normally people start with 1 unit of insulin per 10g carbohydrate. E.g if a banana is 10g of carbohydrates you would need 1 unit of insulin to keep your blood sugar level, hope that makes sense
