Injections After Every Meal Vs Twice Daily?

Vanchatron,

Really depends on your control now. What was your last Hba1c, and your daily bg's lately?

Injecting prior to eating does, in my opinion offer better control. I would discuss this with your consultant should your Hba1c be above average.

Good luck

Nigel

Hi. I think it is quite a personal thing, but generally injecting every meal does mimic a pancreas better and it gives you the flexibility of varying portion sizes and meal times. My daughter is 6 years old and has twice daily injections. This makes it easier for us as she doesn't need an injection at lunchtime when she is at school. The down side is she needs to eat regularly and the same amounts, but for a small kid who likes routine this is a little easier. Her HBA1c is very good at 5.8, so for us there doesn't seem to be any immediate need to change. My husband who is also type 1 was on mixed insulin from the age of 14 and changed to novo rapid with every meal when he was 19 and he has never looked back. He thinks this does give him better control and allows a more flexible approach to meal times, also giving him the ability to correct high readings if necessary.

My Son was on the 2 injections per day and then tried the 4 times a day and that is 100 times better for controll, I am also on the 4 times a day too.

Just one small thing...

The meal time injections should be done as the food is ready on the table !

Not after, this is not reccomended by NHS.

And NOT too long before, as something might happen to prevent you eating the food on time, (your dog might eat it, or you might burn it or 100's of other reasons)

So this is why the NHS reccomend injection as the food is ready in front of you.

Don't get me wrong sometimes you have no option but to take it after you eat, but in general it's as you have the food in front of you.

Eliminator

I find it does give me a lot more flexibility, i.e if i feel like goiing out for a big meal, or eating late, I can.

I can not eat if i feel ill, and i don't have to force myself to eat when i don't want to if i become ill later in the day.

6 injections is a lot, but personally i think it'd be much easier for you to get a pump.
Really look into it, they work for a lot of people.

That way only one 'injection' every few days, and it's much better suited to mimicking a pancreas.
