Good morning I'm looking for some advice, just received a letter from my consultant saying he has received my anti body results and wants to start me on metformin alongside my current insulin, he has started a dose and titration rate however I'm not sure what this means for my insulin so I need to reduce it ? Keep the same ? I have no idea so really looking for some advice from people who take both ? TIA

Hi @Jen92' did your consultant say what your antibody result was?

If your consultant hasn't said to reduce your insulin I don't think starting metformin will mean that you have to. I don't think metformin works super quickly to have an immediate effect on your insulin requirements. Are you on basal bolus? Just keep an eye on your insulin requirements and adjust as you normally would.

I think the titrating is just referring to gradually increasing your metformin dose - I understand some people can find it quite hard on the tummy so they start you off slowly to see if you can cope with it. Apparently there is a slow release version which can be better if you find you it gives you tummy issues.

I was started on metaformin a few months ago and it was a complete shock as I also received a letter out of the blue. I have started taking 500mg morning and at night. I still take my insulin at the same ratio as agreed on my Dafne course

Hi @catapillar
Thank you for replying
My results were elevated anti IA2 ? Not sure what this means.
Does say in the letter that I should start metformin to enable me in the future to reduce my insulin intake but I was concerned that I start taking it and instantly start taking hypos. Guessing it's just trial and error will start it and see how my sugar levels respond thank you.

Thanks for your reply @PkBhoy84
So you continue with the same basal and bonus as you did before the metformin ? Have to noticed any benefit or changes since taking it ? Thank you.

Good morning Jen92. To be honest my blood glucose levels have slightly improved over the past few weeks. I'm not sure if this is down to Metaformin or my new diet fitness regime? Yes I use levimir at the same ratio and also Novorapid 2.1 ratio at meal times. Hope this help

No problem Jen92, I have just started using this forum and have received some great advice from experienced diabetics. I was diagnosed 2 years ago at 30 years old. I am still learning every day. I just wish there was a local support group nearer my home

Hi Jen. Elevated IA2 means that you are demonstrating one of the antibodies that is linked to beta cell degeneration and is often checked as a precursor of type 1.
