Insulin and weight gain

Hi

I'm currently on Lantus once a day and nova rapid before meals, my consultants is still not sure what type of diabetes I have as I am not could be considered a 'typical' type 2 but am not a type 1 either, they thought I may be a LADA but are still running tests.

Since taking the insulin I have been also doing regular excercise and eating healthy food (most of the time anyway) but seem to be getting a bit of a belly! I've always been thin as I have a high Metabolism so this is a little bit of a shock and I'm beginning to look a little odd as I'm thin every where else.

Is this the insulin? or am I just getting old?

Just a thought but do you always inject into your stomach? I was told that if you repeatedly inject into one site, fat can build up in that area and will also possibly affect the insulin doing its job properly. I was told to vary the site I use to inject into.
I can sympathize with you about the big stomach though. Twice I have had people mistakenly think I'm pregnant. I'm not fat all over but I do have a biggish tummy and it's mortifying when people think I'm expecting when I'm not!

No I do not inject in my stomach as it hurts to much!, I do vary where a put the needle tends to be thigh area for nova rapid and my for my lantus my bottom as if I inject the lantus anywhere else it tend to burn and bruise my skin sometimes.

I guess I'll just have to keep doing sit ups!

Speak to the medical team about it.

Some people find that Levemir instead of Lantus as long-acting insulin helps keep the weight off. If the problem continues perhaps asking if you can be changed over (I'm having the same problem with Lantus!)

Ok thanks for the advise, I'll speak to my consultant next time I see her.

Are you sure it's the insulin causing problems? I know Lantus does tend to cause weight gain but I would be inclined to pop along to your GP and get him to check you belly, You might have a fibroid growing thus the tummy expanding and no where else.

Type 1 on insulin for 43 years,No complications

Funny you should say that, last year after a scan my doctor mentioned I had some small Intramural fibroids, I would not have thought they could grow that quickly though but I'll mention it to my consultant all the same........................

Hi ThinType2,
Well, in biochemistry circles, insulin is referred to as the fat building hormone. So, yes, in my opinion, there is a very strong link between insulin levels and body weight.

Type 1's like me have a constant incentive to use as little insulin as possible. Most tend to be slim. Type 2's often suffer from hyperinsulinemia and tend to have bigger fat stores as a result. I'm convinced that if you tested sufferers of obesity, they would virtually all have hyperinsulinemia.

What sorts of healthy food are you eating by the way?

All the best,

fergusc

Hi fergusc

Basically I'm trying not to eat any sugar at all, I swim 2 times a week (20 lengths each time) and goes to a bums and tums class once a week, I work full time and have a husband and 15 year old son to look after so I'm active, don't get me wrong officially me BMI rating I'm slightly underweight---- I just seem to have grown this fatty belly in the last few months after taking insulin....I'm 38 at the end of this year so it could be I'm just getting older and my metablism is slowing down but I'm pretty sure its down to the insulin.just wanted to check on the forum before I mention it to my doctor so I don't look a total idiot if I'm way off base!

Hi, I've been reading this thread with much interest, because I've been eating healthy (most of the time) and doing 150 situps daily, I knew I would gain weight because I went down to size 6 before diagnosis (type 1) and I'm now a size 8-10 (which I know is not overweight) but I have got a pot-belly too, although I dont like to inject in my stomach, prefer to use tops of my legs, so I'm guessing its the lantus - gonna get intouch with the nurse tomorrow and see if I can switch to something else!!!!

Thanks :)
