insulin intolerance

Hi Graeme

You should be so proud of yourself for what you have achieved, especially with all the obstacles that everyone put in your way!!!

I am having problems with ridiculously high sugars and having to take increasing amounts of insulin. Im stuck on an average of 17.6 but mostly in the 20s and sometimes 30s.

I am using Lantus and Humalog and also take Metformin. I have been wondering for a while if I have become intolerant to those types of insulin, reading this post has inspired me to ask about maybe changing insulin type... another thing on my long list to discuss with my DSN.

Definitely get in touch with Diabetes UK and ask for help from the Advocacy Service. They can often help when no-one else can.
I'm not an insulin user myself, but I wonder what kind of insulins you are using. If it's the modern synthetic analogues, could you get your Healthcare team to try you with animal insulin. You might be less resistan to it.your doses sound huge. You might end up needing U500, which is high dose stuff and very expensive. It would be in your PCT's interest to try to find a better solution.
I appreciate you asay you weigh your food to provide 15g carb per meal. I suspect you may need to increase your fats to help.

Hi, I am also insulin intolerant, this was only diagnosed after being on numerous meds and nothing seem to make a difference. Was originally diagnosed with type 1, but after continuous high bloods I decided that i wasnt doing it right so I wouldnt do it at all and threw the lot away pens, needles and meds. I went back to my brill Gp after 6 months who referred me to another consultant, and it was obvious that I wasnt type 1. I was on pioglitisone which make me very ill and I suffered constant pain in my legs and could only use a wheelchair, when I stopped taking it I returned to normal after a few months, and could walk without any pain.

Now I have been on an insulin pump for just over a year and it has changed my life, the constant supply of insulin and carb counting, along with metformin keep my sugars lower. As im type 2 ( but i say type 1.5, as dont fall in the general type 2 ), my consultant had to apply for funding to the LHA as pumps are generally only given to type 1.

Why dont you ask your consultant, as Ive achieved it and it could work for you too. what have you got to lose. good luck x :D

I'm so sorry to hear the difficulties you are experiencing, but well done on the BG control, what a wonderful achievement. You deserve a huge pat on the back.
then it went down hill. Consultant agreed it was working applied for an insulin pump was turned down as technically I am type2.

Suggested 6 injections a day of quick acting 4 of long acting. 6 months later clinical commisioning group are making me jump through hoops. will not fund my extra injections by pa's. My neuropathy is very much worse, tired, breathless. Seing consultant again Wednesday HBa1c 17
