Insulin not working??

I was diagnosed a few weeks ago and put on 2x500mg of metformin a day, and then 1 80mg Gliclazide tablet a day as well. Yesterday that was increased to 2x80mg Gliclazide a day. My levels are still very high after 2-3 weeks of changing my diet, exercising, etc. (doctors don't know if I am type 1 or type 2)

Now, yesterday, I suggested trying a small dose of insulin in the morning in addition to the Metformin and Gliclazide, since it's after breakfast that my levels seem to be at the worst (18 - 25) and I need that extra boost. During the day they are usually around 14 - 18 depending on my activity. (I can't exercise too much because it actually makes my blood sugar go up, as I learned when I walked 2 miles one day.) Now. These levels are still awfully high, but the good news is, they have halved what they were since I was diagnosed. (my glucose level was 37) And although high, they are 'stable', if you know what I mean.

Anyway. I injected 6 units of Humalin I this morning. Which is long acting I believe. This was around 11:30am. I had a bowl of bitesize shredded wheat and a banana. I was still knackered from not sleeping much, and I have my time of the month, so I went back to bed and slept until about 3pm. I tested my blood sugar about 3:30pm, and it was 20.7 mmol/l! I was so shocked at this, because by this time WITHOUT insulin it's never that high, plus I thought the insulin would have surely had some effect? Is it too soon because it's long acting? Or is it because I slept/have period?

And before anyone says anything, just a quick note. This was my FIRST time trying bitesize shredded wheat. I normally have All-Bran with cinnamon, or eggs for breakfast because it's low GI. I'm in a highly experimental stage of my diabetes where I am eating stuff and testing it's effect, to learn what I can and can't have.

I am experiencing something very similar. I have been taking metformin and glicazide for my type 2 diabetes along with non-insulin injections of Liraglutide. Over the last few months my blood sugars were starting to creep up so I have been taken off the Liraglutide and started insulin. Initially 4 units increasing to 6 units after 4 days and then to 8 units after a further 4 days. I don't know if it takes time for the insulin to work, but as I am increasing the insulin my blood sugars seem to be slowly rising. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
