Hey I'm 14 and I use the pen but I've read a lot about the pump and it seems so much easier. But I don't know how I can get one as I was only diagnosed 3 weeks ago but I've got the hang of things. So I was just a Wondering which one is better? And how I can get one? X

Hi Caley,
Great to hear your enthusiasm. The only way to go onto pump therapy is through your diabetes care team. There are a number of conditions you need to satisfy and they will need to assess your readiness to go onto a pump. Ask the question as soon as possible.

Regarding which is better... it depends on the individual. I'm a pump user and much prefer it to injections, but there will be people who don't get along with the pump too. It isn't easy either... most of the same considerations as when injecting, i.e. carb counting, special consideration around exercise and in fact the features of the pump mean that your understanding has to be that much more detailed. E.g. you program different basal rates for different times of the day depending on your needs.

Best way to find out is to keep asking questions though.

Sam.

As you are under 18 you should meet NHS criteria to be preferred for a pump. If you were not over 18 there would be more emphasis on showing that you weren't able to keep to a decent HBA1c using pen injections. So it's good to be young! :-)

I got one yesterday and was only diagnosed 3 weeks ago. I'm very active though so they thought the pump would make life much easier for me to manage my diabetes. So far it has been easier and have only had no hypos.
