My best friend is an Insulin pump user . Recently the pump stop working and the diabetic nurse is refusing to renew it as the warranty expired. He found out the diabetic nurse failed to renew the pump before the warranty expired. He is with west Middlesex hospital and he s been having problem with the nurse, she is the one who , without proper reasons removed him from the diabetic clinic first. He get back to the list ,she promised a month ago to submit his results and asked for a new pump. After a month of agony, as he cannot adjust his blood levels ( after 4 years using pump ,he is back to insulin pen) , he still haven t heard from her.
Today I would like to know anyone of you who has been having problems with [NAME REMOVED] ( diabetic nurse at the west Middlesex hospital). she was rude, unprofessional , and mean to my friend. I was there at every meeting , I believe she always dislike my friend ,she said she was upset he complained about her and will not help him.
He's been trying everything to be heard . He wrote even to the chief executive of the hospital but no answer.

Go to PALS to deal with it.
 
I want to Pals on 3 of April, meet them , did an official complain. Haven't heard from them, called them many times ,left messages to be call back , haven't heard still!

Seems as if you haven't heard anything from anyone. Which does surprise me as the chief ex has to reply within x amount of days. Something isn't quite right somewhere.
 
I would very much recommend that you contact INPUT about this matter and get them to intervene to find out what has gone wrong and if necessary move to another hospital nearer to the airport.
 
Sounds complex - I have been on insuling for 40 years - what is an insulin pump ?

After my warranty expired for my pump, it was my responsibility to have it insured, currently as a named item mobile device on my home insurance policy. Thought that was the same for all pumps

The pump warranty only covers for malfunction of the pump, you bust it or lose it then it's down to you to replace it. I was told from day one of pumping that I had to insure my pump for breakage or loss. Once warranty expires then new pump should be issued.
 
Always had to have added on to house insurance from day 1, not from end of warranty...

Incidentally Accuchek combo users should be aware by the way that certain pump serial numbers have an immediate changeover if they get E7 errors. This was issued for action on the MHRA site by 1st April this year. My pump had this error after stopping a cartridge over, would not restart and kept just giving E7 error. My pump was 3 years 6 months in to usage an immediately stopped no probs.

Just previous posting of insuring after warranty runs out incorrect info reminded me of this info. Pumps weren't recalled, just when they go wrong will be replaced. Just make sure back ups are always kept. MHRA has list of serial numbers affected. As far as I am aware, I was never sent info on this fault to be aware of.....it just happened...

They refused to rênew his pump . Nurse said he doesn't reach the qualification to get the pump renew
I need to know if any one knows the nurse ................?
She is the main problem . I need to know people experience , who s been refused the pump and why?

We should not give personal names on this forum.

However, what reasons were given for not renewing the pump? Had the person had it for 4 years, was it a particular pump he wanted and they wouldn't let the person have his choice of pump, or was it a different reason?

He had the same pump for 4 years then it stop working, nurse failed to renew it before the warranty expired. Now they are refusing to give a new one from Medetronic

The thing is his blood level were good while using the pump. Now his blood level are bad since he started the pen again

Reading between the lines, I would suspect, that the pump has not been renewed for not sticking to the rules of the clinic, i.e, not turning up for the clinic apts so removed from the clinic
Perhaps there is a lot more to this than meets the eye, and OP needs to do some research and find out the full facts oh and not name HCP's on open forums.

That is a different take on things.... Are you sure that he isn't just waiting for funding for a new pump? Medtronic will not send a new pump if it is out of warranty. The hospital will have to re apply for funding to buy a new pump for him. Are you sure that this is not happening..as this would be a reason to go back to pens whilst funding is requested. Some hospitals do not apply for new funding when a pump warranty expires, some hospitals will wait for a pump to break.

That is not the same, as him being refused a pump...I think you need to be more exact as to the reason why you say he is failing to get a pump (without naming names).

It is very rare for a pump to be taken back (I was told by INPUT). The warranty is kind of irrelevant to the renewal. The clinic would be very unlikely to renew before the warranty ended. After the warranty ends there is some additional incentive to get a new pump, but the clinic isn't obliged to get a new one. As DD says, the clinic can wait for it to break. The pump is also NHS property and they can require the patient to return it an any time.

Pump users need to meet NICE criteria but they also need to comply with certain behaviour, as CarbsRok said. This basically means demonstrating an attitude of taking their diabetes self management with the pump seriously. If a patient was in a lot of conflict with the pump team, that might be a reason to discontinue support for that user to be on the pump.

INPUT are the right people to assist you, but they will need a better statement of the facts than has been provided here. They will need the detailed reasons for the DSN discontinuing the pump. If you don't have those reasons, your first step is to insist the clinic gives you their reasons in writing. Politely, of course. I would have thought this was already documented for your PALS meeting?
