insulin pumps are a bit scary

hi there im Karen im a type one for 6 years and have been started on an insulin pump i am keen to hear from people who are on pumps and have any experiences to share or any useul tips for a beginner i dont know anyone that is diabetic so im looking for a wee bit support its a bit scary

Hello Karen, congratulations on getting a pump (and so early in your diagnosis) and finding this place. There's a lot of information to take in with your new gadget, but you adapt quite quickly until it becomes second nature. There's some useful info in the subsection here, have a read and yell with any questions.

What pump are you on?
 
Hi Karen,
We think pumps are great! Both my daughters are on pumps. They (pumps!) are hard work at the beginning to set up but you will soon get used to it all. Just follow the guidelines, test, test, test, and you'll be fine. Good luck with it all.

thanks for replying this website is fab everyone seems right friendly and supportive which is great because i do not know any oher diabetics
in answer to your question my pump is a paradigm 554 and its purple
do you change your battery every time u change your set ?????? :)

No you should not have to change your battery every time you change your set. If that happened, your pump would be faulty. A battery should last several weeks. Be sure to use the recommended type - usually the right batteries will be supplied along with all your other 'consumables' (infusion sets etc).

ditto battery comments. I also don't replace the reservoir with every infusion set, as the instructions imply, that's such a waste of insulin. As long as you prime correctly there should be no problem. But remember to only do a Fixed Prime when you replace the infusion set, otherwise you'll be getting an extra dose of insulin, with potentially disastrous results depending on your sensitivity!
