Hi All,just read article on sir steve redgrave.I thought he was type 2 diabetic and he didnt get it till he was 35.How come he has a pump ive had type 1 for 39 years and cannot have one even though ive asked in my clinic.does anyone know how one is aquired. :?

I read that too, maybe he's self-funded? But as a public figure it probably wouldn't look too good if he was denied the option by his PCT? Not fair, just a reality. I'm not normally a cynic...

Check out the INPUT website: http://www.input.me.uk/ they may be able to help you out in terms of dealing with the blasted NHS rules, regulations, procedures etc. Good luck :)

I've also read that he is type 2 but there is an interview with him on the the Swansea LADA website so I assume he actually has LADA (so type 1)This would make sense as he went immediately onto insulin when diagnosed but at the time he was diagnosed LADA wasn't really recognised in the UK. (still isn't by many docs)
If so, he would be entitled to a pump under normal NHS regulations. If he has got it on the NHS, having a proactive doctor ( Dr Ian Gallen ) and being who he is might have helped.

How would he be entitled to a pump?As ive said befor ive been type 1 for 39 years and would love to try a pump but cant have one
:x :x

I know in the UK it's a bit of a lottery. It shouldn't but often does depend upon the stance taken by individual consultants/hospitals. Nevertheless I've been noticing more and more people starting to use them.
Length of time with type 1 isn't part of the criteria, (LADA is type 1 so if Steve Regrave has this he's as entitled as anyone else with type 1)
official criteria are here.

basically you need to show that you can't reduce your Hba1c below 8.5% with MDI and careful management.
OR
that attemptsing to reach target Hb A1c results in 'disabling hypoglycaemica'. This is defined by frequent hypos and or a lack of awareness of them causing anxiety.
As kegstore says the people at input have a good reputation for being helpful.
