Hello everybody. Im John, 70 from Canberra Australia.

Ive been a type 2 for more than 20 years. My readings are rarely below 8 mmol/L and more often above 10 sometimes reaching 19 mm/l. I have to confess that the high readings are largely due to diet and inactivity (laziness) on my part. I have sleep apnoea which tends to make tired most days. Im 170cm in height and weigh 88-90ks. I take 1000 Mg Metformin twice daily, diamicron 60Mg twice daily, micardis 80Mg once daily and vytorin 10Mg once daily. As you can see Im taking enough medication to stop an elephant.

I have a few reds most nights and the reds actually reduce my glucose levels during the night. . Given the amount of sugar I suspect is in red wine and my GPs opinion that red wine simply cannot improve glucose levels Im at a loss to understand.

Does any have any opinion/knowlege about this aspect.?

Hi @eyton408 and welcome to the forum. Some of us on here do find that a glass or two of red wine does seem to give us lower bs readings the next day. I don't know the medical/scientific reason for this, but as I understand it this is caused by our liver dealing with the alcohol first.
I think there are more informative threads about this. Try searching for Red Wine in the search box.

Actually there's not much sugar in red wine. And my understanding is the effect is as someone said above, your liver is busy dealing with the alcohol.

You might like to consider reducing your carbohydrate intake, including things like cereals, rice, bread, potatoes. Red wine is zero carbohydrate. Beer is high. Sugar is one type of carbohydrate but its seems any kind of carb very easily ends up as glucose in your blood.
