Hi all,

I joined this forum a while back, but had my daughter in April and kind of forgot about it...

Anyway, thought that I'd introduce myself.

I'm Fiona, 32, have a 6 month old daughter and am 16 weeks pregnant (yes, very close indeed!).

I was diagnosed with Type II/NIDDM in 2003 after having blood tests on a pretty regular basis since my teens.

My mam was diagnosed with type II about two years ago (aged 64) and my sister diagnosed last year (aged 38).

I was diet controlled until becoming pregnant with my daughter when I was put on metformin and then insulin. I stayed on metformin after giving birth to my daughter and now, pregnant again, am using insulin to control my diabetes.

Anyway, I've just had some bloods taken to test for MODY/monogenetic diabetes which I'm waiting for results from.

So, there you go, a little about me.

Looking forward to "chatting" and finding out more information.

Most of my posts may be about pregnancy, so hoping that there are some diabetic mothers out there who would like to share their experiences.

I'll shut up for now because I'm a complete chatterbox  .

welcome to the forum,
i dont know much about pregnancy and diabetes as id had my 3 kids before i got type 1 but there are loads of great folk on ere who know lots of info,
take care and congratulations on both babies xxx :D

Hello and welcome, likewise I do not know a great deal about diabetes and pregnancy other than my friends took a bit of extra care for that 9 months. That and she wasn't allowed to go full term apparently because of the diabetes.

I'm sure there are plenty of people on here that can offer some advice and help you through it.

Hi Fiona
I'm grandma to a 6 month old. Aren't they wonderful?
I'm surprised they kept you on MET whilst pregnant.
Was your little angel born normal weight and is your current baby progressing at normal rate too?
If you manage that, you can't expect any more.
evidence certainly would suggest that your diabetes has a strong genetic link
Keeping your carb intake modest won't hurt you or your baby and should help keep the BGs on track.
Look after yourself and your babies.
Having them close together will be hard on you, butgood for them.
Any chance of getting number 1 potty trained before number 2 arrives?

Thanks for the welcome!

Nathan - Yes, I was induced and gave birth to my DD (dear daughter) at 37 weeks and 6 days (37+6). However, my induction date was brought forward a week due to a one off high BP reading... I just didn't want the hassle (and the expense) of having to trail to the hospital to be monitored for the next week. In hindsight, I would try to go as far to term with monitoring as possible now :) .

Hanadr - Although we're using a technique called elimination communication (EC) with DD, it's part time and I don't think that she'll be fully potty trained by the age of 11 months.

But, she's in cloth nappies, so I don't mind. I am hoping to use EC from birth with No2 as well (it's also known as Infant potty training or natural infant hygiene).

I have always been a bit of a carb monster and know that both my mam and sister have a lower hba1c either due to developing diabetes later than I have or eating less carbs (probably the latter!).

I think that I will need some help with the low carb regime as hypos can occur without any symptoms and warnings during pregnancy. Plus, I know I'm at a stage whereby my insulin requirements are going to increase (18 weeks), so it's very hard to keep things on an even keel.

It's certainly something that I need to look at after this pregnancy though :D .

HI There!

My son is nearly 5 months old now, and my daughter has just turned 2..and I thought I had sleepless nights! I am T1, and was through both pregnancies. I had pre eclamsia with my 1st baby, and was induced, then c section at 36 and 5, but my little boy made it to 39 weeks, before he was rudely pulled through teh "sunrrof". I wanted a natural birth 2nd time round, but went of the idea when they explaned that I would still be strapped to multiple machines and drips.
Hope you get the test results you want. I am not sure that I can offer any advice, but if I can, I will!

Hi Sugar,

Yes, I feel the need for a "natural" birth this time too. Being induced and having a long labour and constantly monitored with a GKI drip wasn't fun.

I will try to go as far to term as reasonably possible in order for my body to "take" to the induction iyswim?

I think I'd prefer to control my own BG levels throughout labour though as ther GKI drip is there to make it easier for the MWs who were caring for me - not, IMHO, for me and my baby.
