Hi

I have been invited to a barbie today. Normally there a few of the boys drinking fosters, eating chicken and kebabs and watching football. I have not mentioned that I have been diagnosed as it has only been Thursday. Is there another alcoholic drink that I can drink and which food would be better for me

Sorry about all the question and new posts.

Regards

Chicken and meat kebabs are good as well as salad-as for drink-vodka and diet coke or lemonade-jack daniels and diet coke are all good low carb alternatives to drinking beer-the thing to avoid most at barbies is the bread rolls or anything like pasta salad-meat and salad are pretty good in general.

Is any beer allowed? Never really drank spirits.
Had a bloody mary a few times but not that much

Red wine would be fine, but I'm not seeing it as a drink for this occasion.

Why the downer on beer?
It has some carbs but it isn't anything like fruit juice, or regular colas.
Diet colas have all sorts of nasty chemicals in them.
Alcohol gets preference in the liver so slows down glucose production.

A barbie sounds like an ideal venue for a diabetic - you get to chose what you eat and can go protein and no carbs very easily.

It would be nice, though, to see beers with nutrition labels alongside the health warnings.

"100ml contains x carbs of which y are sugars"

Cheers

If you do not have much choice, best not to drink to much, just use your own common sense, also drink plenty of water. ( strong alcohol apparently has less sugar I think )
Could help the normal conversation if you reveal that you are now a diabetic, there may also be some of them that are diabetic as well.(just a thought)
Whatever make sure you enjoy the Barbie :yuck::):)

Why don't you take along a 6 pack of Low carb Beer for your own use, and explain to your host why.
I cant understand why people get so embarrassed about being Diabetic.

Didn't go in the end. I think it's safer for me as I am still trying to come to terms with being a diabetic.

Used my time to prepare my diet for next week (went shopping) and also went for a bike ride with my son.

Hi , I am in a similar position. But diagnosed 6 years ago. Be careful though this condition creeps up on you , and its the quality of life years down the road we are trying to keep. I done a test last week regarding drink/alcohol. I gave up JD and coke 4 years ago , but have been given a couple of bottles recently for birthday . So when I came from work , I tested BG and it was 5.1 . I drank a can of Coke zero , and 30 mins later tested 5.1 . and then 1 hour later still 5.1. so thats a way of enjoying some grog with out the sugar . A glass of wine or two , only raises my BG by 0.2. I was regularly testing 7.5 to 11 , until Jan when I cut out all carbs , fruit juice etc , and especially flour based products ,( even batter on fish) , and now test 4.8 to 6.8 , still drink a bit , and eat as much as i like with out carbs . We can still have a life !! . Timfin0

I tried a glass of wine and to be honest I didn't really like it
