Hello to all,
I am pre diabetic and eat lots of low carb and test moderately. For evening meal we had Diced pork, and vegetables. I also had a tablespoon of basmati rice.
4 hours after finishing my meal bg is still 9.6. Is this ok. Unfortunately I did not test before my meal.
Of late my bg does not drop quickly. Should I speak to the Gp.
This am, I was 5.6 which is good. I am careful not to eat after my meal.
Not sure I'd use the word "wrong". It's maybe a little higher than a non diabetic would see on a regular basis, but a one off reading, specially given a glucometer's accuracy of +-15% doesn't tell you much.
More of a concern. Realistically, your GP will probably give you an hba1c test, which may or may not be over the diabetes line. When did you have your last one?
Official T2 diagnosis starts at an hba1c of 48mmol/mol (or 6.5% depending on the units of the measuring system you use). That's roughly an average 3 month blood sugar of 7.8mmol/L.
T2s can run at prediabetic levels for years before moving to medication (and if they reduce their carbs never reach that level.) Hopefully you'll be one of those. (Or go below prediabetic levels).

It's practically impossible to draw any meaningful conclusion from a single reading, without knowing what your level was before your meal everything is just guesswork.
I can think of a few possible reasons for your 9.6. The rice is obviously full of carbohydrates but what vegetables did you have, some can be quite carby, any sauce or gravy with the meal? have you done any strenuous activity or had any stress at all in the Hours before and after your meal. Maybe your liver decided to dump some stored glucose? The other thing that comes to mind is did you confirm that 9.6 by doing another test, it's possible that it was a faulty strip or maybe something on your fingers giving a false reading.
May I thank you both for your reply’s.
My HBA1c is due in may. It’s like getting blood out of a stone asking for anything.
When diagnosed Prediabetic, he told me “ No need to test”.eat normally.
I do test st own cost to see reaction to different good.
Bread is a killer as are potatoes. Now it appears rice also. I don’t eat pasta but nearly five hours for the bg to drop is for me somewhat worrying.
I have a very strong family history of T1 so as much as I try to be so careful I think there is a small change.
Thankyou for your reply’s.
Do you mean T2? Though T1 has a small genetic component there's not much you can do to prevent it via diet, though low carbing does seem to allow some people to delay the progression to insulin.
Can't say it's right or wrong only that after several hours after eating I personally would not be happy with still being hyperglycemic.
T2 you should be able to control or possibly prevent by diet. T1 you get it or you don't it is beyond your control.
